Is that not what we got Gill for? That's the role he played in Pittsburgh.
I like a top 6 of O'byrne Mara Gill Hamrlik Spacek Gorges, makes no sense to go trade for anybody, at least short term. weber can be called up if needed but I don't like him being in the press box.
I like our top 6 as well. What I'm trying to get at is that IF we go out and trade for a Dman, I'd hope we get a shut down one rather then an offence one as I think Markov's presenece will be missd to a greater extent in that area.
would Campbell even get picked up on waivers with his salary?
That's why we'de have to give them Hamrlik and they'd give us 2 picks to compensate for that albatross of a contract. I don't think there's many people out there who would argue that Hamrlik is better then Campbell.

**** Campbell!
We already have probably the worst contract in the league in Gomez, not smart cap management to pick up another retarded contract. Markov is a UFA after next season and he is the one that we need to save that 7.5 million per year contract for.
We can't afford to take on Campbell's salary. We're right up against the cap for next year and we have a lot of UFA's and RFA's that we need to resign. Campbell salary would be too much of a glut for us to take on. Other then that I'd love to have Campbell here!
Agreed. We'd have a few overpaid players with no cash to pay youth/compementary pieces or whatever to really be a dangerous team.
To Hawks
D Roman Hamrlik (5.5)
D Paul Mara (1.675)
To Habs
D Brian Campbell (7.140)
Hawks 1st in 2010
Hawk's waive Mara and look to either trade or waive Hamrlik in ofseason.
Same problem. Hamrlik we're rid of in two years. Campbell for 7 years at 7.14 million the Habs can't absorb.
What if you rejig the deal so that the Hawks flip Sharp AND Campbell for Gomez and the cheap young assets (edit- by this I mean reliable NHLers who will stay cheap and can compliment the stars) the Hawks need. Maybe Gill goes back instead of Hamrlik, or O'Byrne or Gorges, add a Weber or Subban and pick(s) and maybe you're in the ballpark of a mega-deal.
Problem is I don't see Gainey flipping Gomez so fast, much as a deal like that might make sense. And without moving Gomez, like others I don't see how they can take Campbell.
Plus no matter how I spin it having Huet or Campbell in a trade proposal is bad!
So everybody in the league knows we might need another Defenseman and we are going to trade two of our D to get one? So with Markov injured and two traded D we get one in return You're a genius here we come.
$36M in 6 players with 10 UFA/RFA players to sign next year where the cap will probably come down at best stay the same.
WE CAN NOT AFFORD HIM. It's a GREAT trade for MTL, just not possible.
Markov's salary wouldn't count against the cap.
If we can manage to have Campbell, Markov, Spacek and Hamrlik as our top 4, we'd have one hell of an offensive team. Our potential on PP would be quite incredible.
We have 7RFAs next year and 4UFAs.
The UFAs:
Metropolit (most likely gone or minimal contract)
Sanford (most likely gone or minimal contract)
Plekanec (his future will depend on his performance and the available centers next summer)
Mara (would be traded for Campbell)
The RFAs:
-S.Kost (would be traded for Campbell I'm guessing)
-D'Ago (probably won't get more than 2M depending on his season)
-Lats (his contract will depend on his season, if he doesn't improve then 1-2M)
-Stewart (small contract)
-Halak (most likely traded)
-Lappy (1-2M)
-Price (only big contract to focus on)
-Chipchura (his future is impossible to know as of today)
So, outside Price and maybe Pleks/Lats, there isn't much to be worried about.
I don't think the cap will drop either. If anything it'll stay the same.
RFAs are also assets that we'll never lose for nothing. Plek is the only ''valuable'' player we could possibly lose for nothing.
So it's not that bad.
I never really liked Campbell, and I hate his contract even more. I'd prefer someone like Barker by miles and miles. I am entertained by the idea of having Campbell though as he's great offensively. He'd be one of the few players in the league that could replace Markov and once the latter one would come back, we'd have one hell of a top 4.
Campbell has 8 years (including this one) on his 7.14M cap hit contract, we would need to get some sweet **** back in return for taking such a crippling contract off their hands.
Forget about the idea of trading Mara. When you struggle to sign UFA's and you get a guy to take a cheap one year deal because he wants to play in Montreal, it would be absolute UFA suicide to trade him. Gainey's smarter than that.
...for four months, which is like minutes when measured against the length of Campbell's contract. Honestly, when there's talk about the worst current contracts in the NHL, Gomez and Campbell are like two of the top three answers. I really don't want to have two of them. If any D-man is making 7mil onthis team, it better be Markov, IMO.
Also not crazy about what Campbell delivers. He's got wicked wheels, but when I was watching in the playoffs the last two years, I didn't like what I saw. He'll wind up in his own zone, blast through the neutral zone looking like he's leading a game-altering rush, and then hit the offensive blue line and -- *poof* -- it's like he ran out of ideas and the play just fizzles out, puck rolls off his stick or he's poke-checked, yada yada.
As a Hawks fan I would consider that a good trade cause we would get rid of Huet's contract after year and we can trade both Kostityn's or move Versteeg and have the Kostitsyn's play.

I honestly just don't see it happening.
Actually he has 7 including this year. After this season he has 6 yrs left

We can't take on Huet's contract. How about you keep Huet and send us Versteeg and Barker.
To Habs
Brian Campbel
Flames 2nd round pick 2010
Flames 2nd rounc pick 2011
That proposal isn't as bad as some make it sound. My only concern is the length of Campbell's contract with the RFA's we need to re-sign next summer.
Perhaps if the Habs added Sergei Kostitsyn (who had success with Kane in junior), the Hawks could switch the 2nd pick in 2011 for Kyle Beach or Akim Aliu?

Check back i summer.
I expect Sopel (Waived or traded) and Versteeg to be gone after this coming year with Huet waived! (Rocky will eat his salary if it means not losing 1 of Kane or Toews)
I expect Aliu, Beach or Makarov to win Versteeg's spot next year and expect the Hawks to sing a cheaper goalie via FA (Halak, Harding, Biron) The FA market for goalies wont be as good next year with shrinking cap. I think the Hawks could get a guy like Halak or Harding for 2 to 2.5 mil a yr for 2 yrs.
If we move Versteeg and waive Huet it equals almost 9 mil in free cap space and add in Madden and Eager leaving via UFA it free's up nearly 4 mil.
If Hawks take those action I expect we will be able to retain all 3 of our big RFA's + Ladd and stay realtively strong for 2010-2011.
We have to move either Huet + Versteeg or Campbell or 3 of Byfuglien, Versteeg, Sharp or Barker to be good for next year.
If the Hawks take my actions (Which I expect) we will ice this lineup.
It will take some work but Hawks have the depth in Minors (Skille, Beach, Aliu, Makarov) to lose a forward or 2 and the key will be to move Huet or Campbell or waive Huet to free up his cap hit.
Actually now that I look at it we dont need Skille, Beach, Aliu or Makarov to take a spot. We are pretty deep at forward

I would have no problem trading Beach or Skille but Aliu looks to be something special.
During rookie camp and training camp he showed alot of signs of maturing and played well.
