Blue Jackets defenseman Rostislav Klesla, the last original Blue Jacket, got quite the opening gift tonight.

The Blue Jackets announced shortly before faceoff of the season opener vs. Minnesota that Klesla has signed a four-year, $11.9 million contract extension that will carry him through the 2013-14 season. The deal will pay Klesla $2.975 million in each of the four seasons. He could have become a free agent this season.

I think when he dies, they are going to bury him under centre ice at Nationwide.

That's a great deal for a vastly underrated d-man. Great contract, good job Rostislav.

Good for the Jackets and Klesla. Provided the money isn't too high.

I remember a few years ago, when Klesla was drafted. Right after Gaborik and Heatley, Klesla was drafted 4th overall by Columbus and was supposed to be the cornerstone of the franchise.

Although he has become a very serviceable top-4 defenseman, he never lived up to his expectations. He was seen as a poor man's Pronger as he had size and a formidable repetoire of offensive, defensive and physical tools.

I am glad that he is likely going to play out his entire career in Columbus though. I didn't realize that their roster changed so much. He is now the only original BJ left.

Thats pushing it for when Rusty brings to the table. He's a solid shutdown D-man, but not much else. A far cry from the Pronger/Niedermayer hybrid or whatever McLean hyped him up to be.

Not a bad deal for either side. I think he will break out this year, i predict 30 + pts, with solid defensive play.

Looks good in comparison to the contracts of Redden, Rosival, Orpik, Scuderi, etc. contracts, but doesn't look so good compared to the contracts of Michalek, Seabrook, Vlasic, etc.

Um, maybe because all those guys signed contracts when they were 22-24? Klesla is 27. And when Seabrook, Vlasic, and Michalek are 27, they'll be making a hell of a lot more than 1.6M.

Great contract for Klesla. Columbus does it again..

In today's free agent market, I don't think that is as true as it once was. GMs are handing out big contracts to RFAs due to the increased chance of poaching once the players hit free agency.

Oilers fan says this is a great signing. I think Kesla is worth more than this. I thought he'd get 4 mill per.

Rusty delivered us a thank-you gift tonight; the GWG, which was a bullet.

The CBJ's roster turnover has been incredible.

Of the players that played the majority of the CBJ's games in the first year after the lockout (05-06), only three remain: Klesla, Nash & Chimera.

If you want to compare today's roster to 06-07's, the only player you have to add is Modin.

We had three original Jackets going into 07-08. Klesla was last man standing at the start of 08-09 (Shelley was traded, Vyborny went home).

I don't see how that is even mildly surprising. I'd be a lot more surprised if any player taken in an expansion draft stuck with the team for ten seasons (or made the original team without being a high first-round pick). There aren't any of the original Wild left either. Or Predators (except Legwand, their exact counterpart to Klesla). Or Thrashers.

I think that this could potentially end up being one of those contracts that a team is always looking to move. Not that Klesla is a bad player, but it just seems like the type of contract that everyone wants to move.

From the first year, no, of course not. But the "incredible" bit was talking about since the lockout, and that's still a relatively short amount of time.

In any case, I'm happy with this one. We have our captain and franchise winger, #1 and #2 centers, and fanbase scapegoat locked up for the next half decade.

I think he gets traded before the contract is up.

Alot of money for someone so replaceable.
