How is that possible given that he still has two years left on his contract with the Rangers - did the team agree to this move? And does this free up a spot under the 50 contract limit?

Whether they agreed to the move or not, the team will suspend him for not reporting and therefore not have to pay him. His contract continues to count towards the 50 contract limit as far as I know. If/when he comes back to the US, he'll still have 3 years remaining on it.

(Edit to add, 3 years because of the whole contract "sliding" thing Rangerboy explained a few days back in this thread.)

Actually if the team agrees to it, then they could in some instances still be paying him. Believe when DAL loaned Nickerson to Finland, they were still paying him.

Sounds like Zaborsky has violated his deal, and as Squishy points out, probably suspend him.

Now, if NYR org is no longer paying him and Finnish team is and if they don't have a transfer agreement in the contract (probably doesn't), then wouldn't it be similar (stressing similar) to Vrbata's situation 2 years ago?
http://blogs.tampabay.com/lightning/...-vrbata-a.html
"Vrbata's contract does not have a European assignment clause, as did defenseman Janne Niskala, but since Vrbata requested the transfer and Tampa Bay agreed, the team is relieved of the $3-million salary obligation and salary cap hit."

Which leads me to my next question: if similar, how could team be forced to count a contract they are not paying against their total of 50?

Just doesn't make sense that it would count if they are not paying it. Then again, there is a lot in the CBA etc of the NHL that doesn't make sense....

The Rangers have agreed to the transfer of Zaborsky to Finland. He will have 2 years left on his contract with the Rangers (I originally put in 3, but there is no slide on it).

I hope they learned something from the Zabrosky joke. Because thats all that it is.

The kid is so far from beeing a NHL talent that its not even funny. Something that should have been obvious to everyone when he first played in the WJC's.

Sliding applies to players signing contracts as 18 and 19 year olds who don't play a certain number of games in the NHL at that age.

Why agree to transfer/loan Zaborsky to Finland? The Rangers assigned him to Charlotte and he refused the assignment. Players with entry level contracts can be assigned to the ECHL w/o their permission. He breached his contract. Terminate it and make him a free agent. Lou did it to Shanahan.

Perhaps by agreeing to loan him, they hope he plays well and either makes it in HFD next year or the more likely scenario they can pawn him off to another org for a late round or conditional pick or something. Doubtful they'd get anything, but maybe they figure worth a shot...

Different situation w/ NJ. Lou and Shanny had agreement what would be done if Shanny didn't make the top lines.

The situations are markedly different.

You are two steps behind.

The Devils claimed Shanahan breached his contract when he didn't report to the AHL. They terminated it.

Zaborsky didn't report to Charlotte.

Zaborsky is really going to play well enough in Finland to increase his value!!! For what? A seventh round pick.

The Rangers are better off freeing up a SPC.

They don't want to terminate his contract. Despite what has been said above, there is a chance that he plays well in Europe and they get something for him. I highly doubt that he comes back to play in the Rangers organization but he might come back for a good opportunity.

I disagree that he doesn't have NHL talent. He needs to develop; may happen, may not, but why cut the cord, when you think a kid might be worth something?

Actually the breach, and termination were part of their off the record agreement and just a formality. By doing those (in concert w/ each other) remove contract and salary entirely and both walk away with zero attachments.

SEE: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/devil...ZHncUMmOUzBINI

It was planned by both sides.

Now, if Z's contract doesn't count (which no one has yet confirmed) then why just give him up for free. They are pissed he didn't report, so why give him the easy way out? Stupid? Yes. Are they trying to make a point? probably.

And 7th rnder is better than nothing.

Here is part of an incredibly poor translation of the press release, courtesy Google Translate:

Aces has made a final-season contract in New York against the Rangers' Tomas Zaborskyn with the club tells the web service.

In November, 22 years satisfying the Slovak central striker Tomas Zaborsky moves to Pori Rangers Minor league affiliates Hartford Wolf Pack. Zaborskyn agreement contains a month probationary period.

The agent gave us a beating because of his development of it would be better to play in Europe than in North America, sub-series. This is a young and hungry player and we want to consider this card.

Clearly, Finnish is not easy for a machine to translate (not so easy for people either).

The Montreal Juniors and the Saint John Sea Dogs agreed to terms on a trade late today.

The Sea Dogs sent defenseman David Stich to the Juniors for a third round pick in the 2010 QMJHL Entry Draft.

Stich, a fourth overall selection in the 2006 CHL Import Draft, appeared in 174 games for the Sea Dogs over a three-year career. He registered 14 goals and 46 assists.

Stich signed an ATO with HFD last spring. He attended the Pack's training camp last month.

http://www.theahl.com/

There are only two reasons to go to the Wolf Pack site: Press Releases and Crawford's Corner.

Everything else you want -- except IR info, which no team site is going to freely offer you on their web site -- is on the AHL site.

To save you the trip... the only transaction of note recently was Wiikman's call-up. Zaba (concussion) and DiDiomete (broken arm) are injured. Potter, Byers, and Parenteau are As.

thanks squish! i wouldn't be surprised if they still had "Semenov signs with Rangers"

how piss poor is it for a team to not even have their full schedule on their website???

really, only other than bob crawford's corner, they might as well take it offline..
