Who should win the Norris?

Its a strange year: lots of very good performances, but not many dominating ones. It is not like the years in which guys like Pronger and Lidstrom were light years beyond that competition.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that Zdeno Chara should get the nod. He put up decent offensive numbers, had a stellar plus/minus and dominated the ice on many nights.

What do you all think?

Neids or Chara are similar this year. I'll give it Neids because he's been better for longer.

Neidermayer all they way. Best defenseman i've seen all season. I base that on being able to see Chara a lot. Chara is good but overall Neidermayer wins for being more important to his team.

I don't know who will win it...but I'm expecting Niedermayer will.

Chara/McCabe lack American support, therefore no Norris is coming their way...that's my oppinion at least.

Scott Niedermayer means more to the Devils than any other defenseman to their respective teams.

Yes it's so absurd to think that a 53pt defensemen who's a +22 might get consideration. I dont think he'll win nor should he, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if he finished top 5 in voting.

Maybe, but I'm not sure that is relevant. The Norris is not a MVP type of trophy. Its not a question of which defesemen is the most valuable to his team but rather which defensemen had the best overall season. Now, you could make an arguement that Neidermayer fits into that category, but that is a different issue.

I agree. McCabe isn't getting enough attention because he has been inconsistent in the past. But, based on this season, he definitely deserves votes.

nahh man. It's just he's a leaf. As long as he's a leaf he won't get the respect that he should. Oh well, Maple leaf fans did this to themselves. They're hated for a reason.

I think Scott Niedermayer should win it, although I wouldn't be shocked (or upset) if the nod went to Chara, Pronger, or Schneider.

In my opinion the top five this year have been (in order):

Niedermayer
Chara
Pronger
McCabe
Schneider

Pronger might have something to say about that.

Spend some more time on these boards and you should realize that the majority of Leafs fans here are civil and open-minded in their approach to matters such as these. Obviously as with any fans we tend to be slightly if not a bit overly biased, but as I said that is to be expected of anyone. Those members on these boards who happen to root for the Leafs should not be focussed into the somewhat deserved generalization of load mouthed homer fans which Toronto seems to retain. These fans follow the Leafs and the Leafs only, whereas those of us here try to be well informed and follow other hockey as much as possible.

So please don't try and say that McCabe is not worthy of Norris recognition just because it was a Leafs fans who said that he did. Instead watch him play and hopefully you will realize that he is deserving of far more credit than you give him.

Obviously, you know nothing about hockey or the Leafs. No one has piced Mccabe to win the Norris. People have simply pointed out that he is having a very strong year and should be considered a top 5 candidate. That being said, I think that the Norris should go to Neidermyer

Certain players have had huge streaks. Pronger and Schneider were awesome at the start of the season, but perhaps tailed off for stretches.

To me the most consistent elite defensemen have been Niedermayer, McCabe and Chara, in that order. Honorable mention for Wade Redden.

Niedermayer should and will win the Norris. He has been exceptional, with nary a drop in his level of play all season long, and he has the notoriety league-wide to get the votes he deserves. His team also broke the league record for lowest team goals against for a season of at least 80 games, and he plays a key role in overall team defense.

This is one of the few trophies that I suspect voters will have little problem awarding.
