Did You Know?
  • Eyes on the prize boys. The Penguins will attempt to be the first team since the 1996-97 and 1997-98 Detroit Red Wings to repeat. Since Mario & Co. drank from Lord Stanley’s Cup for a second time the Red Wings are the only repeat champions in the past sixteen seasons. Both the Penguins and Red Wings will attempt to be the first team since the 1982-85 Edmonton Oilers to reach a third consecutive Stanley Cup Finals appearance.
  • With the Penguins 3rd Stanley Cup Championship we are now tied for the 8th most titles, the same number as Original Six squad Chicago and one behind our opening night foe.
  • The 2008-09 Penguins join the Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Season Not Played on the current 5th rung of the Stanley Cup.
  • Who’s on the Cup?
    MANAGEMENT AND STAFF (27)
Mario Lemieux, Ron Burkle, Bill Kassling, Tom Grealish, Tony Liberati, Ken Sawyer, David Morehouse, Ray Shero, Chuck Fletcher, Ed Johnston, Jason Botterill, Dan Bylsma, Mike Yeo, Tom Fitzgerald, Gilles Meloche, Mike Kadar, Travis Ramsay, Chris Stewart, Scott Adams, Mark Mortland, Dana Heinze, Paul DeFazio, Danny Kroll, Frank Buonomo, Tom McMillan, Dan MacKinnon, Jay Heinbuck

    PLAYERS (25)
Sidney Crosby (Capt.), Sergei Gonchar, Evgeni Malkin, Craig Adams, Philippe Boucher, Matt Cooke, Pascal Dupuis, Mark Eaton, Ruslan Fedotenko, Marc-Andre Fleury, Mathieu Garon, Hal Gill, Eric Godard, Alex Goligoski, Bill Guerin, Tyler Kennedy, Chris Kunitz, Kristopher Letang, Brooks Orpik, Miroslav Satan, Robert Scuderi, Jordan Staal, Petr Sykora, Maxime Talbot, Mike Zigomanis
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins employ three players who have scored Stanley Cup clinching goals – Max Talbot (Penguins, 2009), Ruslan Fedotenko (Lightning, 2004), and Mike Rupp (Devils, 2003). I’m not doing the research involved to make sure this is 100% true, but I’m almost certain that this is the first time a team has employed so many players that have accomplished this feat since the Islanders employed Mike Bossy, Wayne Merrick, and Bob Nystrom in 1983-84. The Penguins were close to being the other previous team, but Paul Coffey was traded at the 1992 trading deadline, before Ron Francis joined the club. Ulf Samuelsson is the other Penguin to score a clinching goal.
  • Perhaps just as impressive as the above stat is the fact that Talbot and Fedotenko scored both of their team’s goals in 2-1 Game 7 victories.
  • Evgeni Malkin was the first Russian-born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, and only the fourth non-Canadian to win the award after American Brian Leetch (1994) and Swedes Nicklas Lidstrom (2002) and Henrik Zetterberg (2008).
  • Unsurprisingly Jay McKee will be the first Penguin to ever wear the #74. He’ll be only the 8th Penguin in history to wear a number in the 70s. The others: Evgeni Malkin (71), Konstantin Koltsov (71), Jiri Slegr (71), Eric Meloche (72), Jeff Christian (72), Richard Park (76), and Paul Coffey (77). Only Coffey, Miroslav Satan (81), Martin Straka (82), Petr Klima (85), Sidney Crosby (87), Rick Tocchet (92), Petr Nedved (93), and Aleksey Morozov (95) have worn higher numbers.
  • With Hal Gill moved on to Montreal new signee Mike Rupp takes over the title as largest Penguin, officially measured at 6’5”, 230.
  • The smallest Penguin, officially, is Alex Goligoski at 5’11”, 180. Goligoski, Tyler Kennedy (183), Ryan Bayda (185), Sidney Crosby (200), and Matt Cooke (205) are all 5’11” as well.
  • Five Oldest Penguins:
  • Five Youngest Penguins:
  • Longest Distance from Home (not counting Craig Adams’ bogus Brunei birthplace): Evgeni Malkin, 5505 miles (beats Sergei Gonchar by all of 57 miles)
  • Your humble DYK author’s Distance from Pittsburgh: 3970 miles

This is thanks to the adoption of the Gregorian Calender in 1752, which is 11 days longer than the Julian calendar that was used during Washington’s birth. The calendar also changed New Year’s from March 25 to January 1, which caused the change in the year.

  • 40 more regular season games at Mellon Arena after this.

Players to Watch

Jay McKee

Jay McKee has some big shoes to fill as the Penguins lost their defensive "piece" in Rob Scuderi. Scuds was very important to the team playing a sound defensive game night in/night out. The defensive zone could be a struggle for the Penguins this season unless that void is filled. McKee came over after having his contract bought out by St. Louis to fill that very role. He has good defensive positioning and has a niche blocking the opposition's shots. He'll need to stay healthy and play a high level of defense to be successful and help the Penguins go back to the postseason.

Jordan Staal

At the young age of 21, Jordan Staal already has three full seasons, two Stanley Cup Finals, and one Stanley Cup ring on his resume. That is quite impressive, however there is still a lot for Staal to accomplish. He has made a name for himself in this league as a defensive specialist w/ the ability to a great penalty killer as well. Jordan will be looking for more this season, and that more is his offensive production and consistency. I expect Staal to improve his game even more and fulfill his offensive potential as we all know he can. I also expect him to find consistency too. It's his 4th season and Jordan knows expectations are high. He's mature enough now to deal with them appropriately and have his best season yet.

Dr. Crane's Couch

Welcome, friends. Please, make youselves comfortable. Tonight begins the first of many lasts to come this season. Not only will the Pens be celebrating their 3rd Stanley Cup in franchise history, but they will be playing their last home-opener in the old Civic Arena. Closing is the building that Super Mario, Jaromir Jagr, and Jean-Claude Van Damme made famous. Awaiting just across the street is an aesthetically superior, more modern, and much larger arena with hopes of experiencing half the events that the Mellon has seen over the last 40+ years.

So tonight, we say "hello, again" for the very last time.

Thanks to ColePens, Kinguin, and Big McLargehuge for all of their major contributions to this group GDT

BTW, the Rangers lineup was taken from a poster on the main board, so it's anyone's guess. I changed up the d-pairings a little bit.

EDIT: Just in case people overlook the very end, this was a group GDT and thanks should go to ColePens, Big McLargehuge, and Kinguin.

Beautiful... Kinguin's work is a masterpiece. I just can't get enough of it. And I love the Dr Crane's Couch idea haha. Perfect fit. Big Mc from 4,000 miles away w/ a bad ass "did you know" section, too.

Great work, great GDT.

I can't believe we are back already. It seems like the Game 7 GDT was up just last week. Hopefully your GDTs still have the magic and start us off 1-0.

Oh, and maybe I'm selfish since I live out of market, but isn't justified to show the defending Champs banner raising game?

I will nitpick because I am a whiny communist penis-head with girl troubles to boot:

Eaton's first name is spelled Mark, not Marc.

Why isn't Kennedy on Malkin's line? I thought he was supposed to get a shot there.

Crap. I copied it over from an old GDT so I must have missed that last season sometime. I'm anal about that kind of stuff, too. No worries.

Haha. Anal.

Class GDT.
Lets hope the team lays a tremendous beating on the Rags. I'm wishing for the hockey equivalent of a flaying here, 8-1 or something .

Btw. saw Caps at Bruins this morning (over here), and while its too early to mean anything, one team was demonstrably better than the other. The A.O-Bäckström duo will get ludicrous amounts of points again this season.

Washington looks very good offensively, but didn't change at all in the defensive zone. Boston just looked slow and had absolutely no energy out there.

It kinda seemed like every time the Bruins had a decent shift, or a little momentum, they'd throw out that Chara - Wideman (or was it Morris?) pairing and they'd just bog things down and kill the tempo. I think that's the negative side of having a guy like Chara that logs so many minutes, he can't really afford to involve himself in the 5-man offensive attack/pressure, he's always staying back and usually standing flatfooted, and making the safe pass only.

I'm convinced that hockey could be a bigger sport in the U.S. simply by importing some quality commentators from CBC/TSN who understand that when talking during a hockey game, less is more.

Make play-calling the first priority, and save most of the insight and "amusing anecdotes" for stoppages. But most of all, know when to shut the hell up and let the big moments speak for themselves.

I don't know if it is the short off season after a cup run or that fact that summer seems to always fly by, but man this season came up quick. I ain't complaining though
