Gainey wanted Lang!!!

I had never heard this news before, but according to Mathias Brunet in its public interactions of yesterday on the site of La Presse, he said that the Montreal Canadiens had done everything to get Robert Lang at the trade deadline... Was somebody well-informed of that??? Comments...

Look towards the end (in french):

You can trust me, it's true, according to Mathias Brunet of La Presse, a credible source... But, like you, it sounds strange for me... A big contract, but he's a right-handed center... On a 3rd line, behind Koivu and Ribeiro???

I heard this reported on The Habs This Week {Saturday on CFCF] well before Christmas. I believe McGuire mentionned it a while ago. It was said that the holdup back in Nov./Dec. was the ammount of salary Wash. would cover.

That's a refreshing thing to hear! I had to wonder about BG going with Kovalev and couldn't believe that would have been his first choice.

Personally, I wouldn't have had any hangups about the cash. Just take Lang at the full face value, because realistically speaking $5M a year is not a bad pricetag for a 1st line player. (Notice: 1st line player. !Not! 3rd line center! ).

The thing with Lang is that he makes players around him better. He doesn't have to be the go-to guy like Kovalev, and he's consistent in what he does. Lang would have been a spectacularly better pickup than Kovalev.

The problem I'd have there instead would be with the price. Fleischmann is not dramatically different value-wise than a pick'em of Hossa/Balej. But beyond that, it'd also be giving up our 1st pick and a 4th, *without* the fallback of getting any compensation back.

Is Lang worth a 1st and a 4th more than Kovalev... mmm... well as it has turned out, maybe, but without the benefit of hindsight the gamble on Kovalev at the lower price makes sense.

Anyway, it's good to know that small chink in BG's armour might have an explanation.

Gainey probably offered Ribeiro for Lang...because as some of you have pointed out, 3 no.1 centers make no sense.
