let me put it this way, brisebois scored 5 goals last year, mab scored 15. I doubt he can be as slow as brisebois or make more defensive gaffs. He also hits more i think. We're paying him about the same as breezer.

Bad deal?

MAB, has pretty good speed, a howitzer, and better hockey sense.

that was more or less my point. I don't see why so many people complain about this signing. We'll have insane defensive depth when/if everyone comes back.

I also think it's a decent pickup. I really don't know much about the guy, but everyone says he is horrible defensively. So what? If he has the shot that everyone says he has I think that fills a big hole on the power play. Even if Markov was not hurt, the team is still lacking that big shot from the point. The pp has looked horrible, so this will only help. As you said, pair him with a stay at home D, and hopefully he will do ok even strength. I never thought Souray was very good in his own end, but what he brought to the pp made up for that big time. Just having Souray on the ice during the PP opened up room for the forwards. I am not saying Bergeron's offensive talent is equivalent to Souray, I am just saying that any kind of threat from the point on the pp is really going to help this team.

I like the signing. Good job Bob!

1) Nope. He's actually below average for a 5'10 guy.

2) Yes.

3) His decision making is absolutely terrible. Brisebois actually was decent-to-good in getting the O in transition. MAB throws picks.

Good deal if he's in the stands unless we rack up more injuries, because he's better than Carle and Subban. Brutal if Weber doesn't get a fair shake.

I like the signing. I haven't seen him play much before, and most of the comments I've heard from other fans about his defensive liabilities come from his stays with the Islanders. He does have a cannon shot from the point; when he was with the Oilers he hit 103 mph during a skills competition. There's a Youtube video that shows it.

Last season, he had the best plus/minus among the Wild's defencemen. I have a feeling that so long as the coach limits his role to a #5/6 pairing (except for power play time) then he should be fine for the Habs. That was the same strategy that the Habs used with Brisebois during his second tour of duty, and it worked well for him.

never said it was a bad deal
just wanted to warn you guys

offensive dman with tendencies to make huge braincramp plays
that's what he is
that's what brisebois was

lets not ask too much out of him and we should be fine

It's funny how people keep nagging about his weaknesses, do you really think the perfect hockeyplayer would sign for $750 000? Of course Bergeron has his weaknesses but for a PP-specialist with a laser shot $750 000 is a low price to pay. His +/- should indicate that he isn't as bad defensively as some (most) think.

Low risk - high reward.

Good signing.

We have so many whiners in the Habs' fanbase.

I have a suggestion... How about everyone reserves their judgment until we actually see him play a game with us?

This signing reminds me of when we traded for Schneider and how everyone was losing their **** because he had supposedly become a terrible defenceman. When he started playing and everyone saw how effective he was on the PP, everyone changed their minds.

Whining?

Is it impossible that there is maybe some reasons behind the fact he was traded many times already?

That he was laying there with no contract?

This is no whining, its just being realist

I think that in many ways he falls in that category of guys who will want to impress tremendously this year, I think we'll end up liking him

Too bad he shoots left.

Too bad he's small. The defense as a whole needs some toughness. Hope Fischer gets more muscle and a mean streak. Not many big guys in the system (McDonagh, sigh).

Can't complain even a little bit about the bang for the buck.

The hockey gods want Subban. There will be more injuries until they are placated.

Great pick-up by the Habs.

My take on it, with comments form Bergeron.

Excuse me Mr. Realist, but what are you trying to imply? I don't think I ever said in my post that there are no reasons for him being traded so many times, or that he was "laying there" with no contract. If you read though the thread, I specifically stated that IF he was used properly (pretty much only PP time) he would be a good addition to the team, IF used otherwise, he wouldn't.

But then again, what do I know... You're the one who's the realist.

How the heck does signing MAB help our defence? That's like saying the Leafs signed Komisarek for his PP prowess.

MAB is only a plug (a cheap, bad one) for the PP.

Correct me if I'm wrong!!

PROS:
< he's a rightie
< gives time for Weber and PK to properly develop instead of rushing them (bad pressure, less development at AHL level)
<Our PP just improved by a lot, imo, but give Berge some time of course (Spacek, M-A Bergeron, maybe Weber will be there also for our PP, that would be solid...Gorges can maybe have a solid season for our PP as well)
<750,000 is great for our cap (+ we're aving what? 2 mil from Markov's salary?)
< even IF it doesn't work out (give him at least 15-20 games), 750,000 is not a lot in the NHL AND we didn't give anything up for M-A. And, O'Byrne will come back and then Markov will also...WIN-WIN situation.
<Bergeron should be so happy to have another crack at the NHL since he might have faced RETIREMENT (I'm sure Bergeron will play his heart out for our CH...hopefully!).
There should be good/healthy pressure on Berge.

CONS:
not too many...imo. I'm just gonna be patient for his first 10 games...I'm just crossing my fingers for his defense (I betcha his defense is decent/more than good enough). I wish him all the luck. We need to be good, patient fans for Bergeron. He might pay us back with solid performances.

IMO,
M-A Bergeron>>Schneider
1) salary (750,000 is great for our cap VS whatever Schneider is making now, especially last year)
2) both have solid shots, both are solid for PP, but...Schneider was USELESS defensively, imo. I'm hoping Bergeron has some grit on defense (some!).
3) RDS likes him because he's french Quebecois
4) adds depth at a cheap price, and if it doesn't work out in the next 3-4 months, then he will be #7-8 dman (not bad at all) when everyone returns from injuries.
5) I only know about him from Edmonton and he is solid for PP, but defensively...I don't know that much aboout him (hopefully he's decent and not as bad as some are saying). I also betcha he's way more gritty than Brisebois (defensively).

This is what I mentionned, this guy has a bone to pick and wants to prove people wrong about him

Quote:
Bergeron entend toutefois lancer un message clair à toutes les équipes qui lui ont tourné le dos pendant l’été ainsi qu’à ceux qui croient qu’il n’est qu’un joueur unidimensionnel.
Per the RDS article
