Good luck in Montral Bergeron, you gonna need that a lot.
He is a HAB now and I am going to cheer for him.

Gainey Also sign Spacek, Gionta, Cammalleri, Moen, Mara, Gill

I guess it's because no other team wanted them either

Pretty funny. I really liked this guy in the past and I have (or had, might be gone now) a banner of him on the habs main website.

I also joked about getting Gomez and said said we should get Moen about 10,000 times.

I can predict the future

I'm very pleasantly surpised at the amount he signed for.

Like I said in the other thread, I would have rather given Weber/Carle a chance first and then go to MAB as a last resort, but I'm OK with this. Markov and O'Byrne both out for multiple months creates a huge depth issue at defense. He's an experienced NHL defenseman, even though he's pretty bad defensively, if we limit his minutes, we should be OK.

He'll help the PP, but we're missing the player who can set him up the best...

Will be interesting to see what happens when O'Byrne comes back. I would expect him to have a spot in the line-up and MAB to be 7 and possibly waived when Markov comes back, but we'll see.

Either way Bienvenue Marc-Andre, Bonne Chance.

For 750k, and who we've recently lost to injury, I wouldn't say our D got worse at all, if anything we've improved the team overall. Hes not as terrible on D as everyone seems to be over-exaggerating about.
Our D was already bad and yes it got worse. PP specialist like Scheinds last year. Was his D any good?

I'm not a big fan of MAB but we need some offense from the blue-line to replace Markov and one-year at $750k is very low risk. Whenever O'Byrne gets back, I would actually like to see JM use MAB in a Streit role....play him up front except on PP. Streit's offensive versatility was HUGE during our wonderful 2007-08 regular season and he was a key reason for us scoring the 2nd most goals in the NHL that season.

The D-man I was hoping we would inquire about is Randy Jones who is currently in the AHL playing for the Philadelphia Phantoms. He's a decent two-way D-man , scored 31 points in 2007-08, has some size but fell victim to the cap in Philly.

Anyway, let's give MAB a chance. His numbers in defense-first Minny are encouraging.

Why are people surprised by the amount he signed for?

Nobody wanted him.

Either he accepts what Gainey says or he is in Siberia. Literally.

The thing with me is that we lost our PP quarterback in Markov. Not our cannon on the PP. It irritates me to no end when fans and even the so-called geniuses on hockey broadcasts refer to guys like Souray and Streit as the PP QB. That's the designation of the player that makes the plays, not finishes them. Bergeron is no different. He has the shot, but what makes the PP dangerous is the plays made by the PP QB, Markov. A redundant shot can be negated, but not when the slick PP QB can make other plays than just a pass to the other point man.

We added another Spacek, the 'big' shot from the point, but didn't help the loss of Markov.

Why waive Bergeron? They could probably trade him at the deadline and failing that it would just be easier to send Weber down as he wouldn't have to clear waivers.

I really do not think its Gainey NOT showing confidence in Weber etc, I think it is an insurance policy, a cushion in case Weber has an unserstandably hard time playing out of the gate. AT 750 000 I like the signing, it is safe....

I like it for 750K. Nice shot and at 5' 9" 198 he must be pretty strong. How's his skating?

At deadline assuming all are healthy:

Markov
Hamrlik
Spacek
Mara
Gill
Gorges
O'Byrne
Bergeron

We probably won't have space to carry 2 extra D...and I'm honestly not sure if we'll be able to trade him at the deadline, not like there was a huge rush to sign him in the first place. I don't think there's a ton of interest in the guy.

That being said though, I could see us trading him to Columbus for a 3rd or 4th or whatever at the deadline if their PP is as bad as it was last year's.

Either way, I wish him all the best now that he's a hab.

I'll give him a chance...let's see how he does.

Best case: he improves the PP, plays ok and we got a fine temporary replacement.
Worst case: he sucks, we bench him/send in Hamilton and rely more on Weber.

Low risk high reward IMO.

Anyways he should be a PP specialist and play maybe 13-16 mins max per game. No big deal.

What's his speed like?

Exactly. I don't like MAB but we have no insurance in case another defenceman goes down. Carle and Subban aren't ready to make the jump. Weber was with us at the end of last season. We need an NHL ready defenceman in case we have a 3rd defensive injury. He won't take Weber's place IMO unless he shows that he's not ready. MAB is reporting to Hamilton says it all.

We could play him on the 4th line and give him the PP as a defense man?

You don't have to put him on the 4th line, that was Carbonneau's fascination with rolling 4 lines all the time.

We can have 7 d-men with limiting ice-time to MAB and O'Byrne or whoever is struggling.

Anyway, with the way Martin is using his 4th liners, there wouldn't be any problem with that.
