From Tim P.:

Quote:
Center Blair Betts (dislocated right shoulder) participated in drills, but took no contact, did not fire any slap shots, and wasn’t taking faceoff draws. He pretty much ruled out any chance of playing against Boston. The new target date is the weekend. He continues to take strength tests, but until he can handle contact and faceoff draws, he won’t be ready. The schedule actually favors him healing here with down time between games. …

Tough to judge. He has a history with that shoulder and he needs to take part in contact drills during practice first.

At this point, knowing that we'll need him in the long run, I don't want to rush Betts at all. I mean, if he's not even doing contact drills yet, there's no use in getting him into a game this weekend. We've had all this time off -- let him heal for at least 2 more weeks.

We've got a capable roster anyway, it's not like we're raiding the Phantoms for players. As long as Cote's still in the pressbox, we're fine.

Agreed 100%. As well, I hope these extended breaks have been a time for Gagné to shake off any lingering effects of his Team Canada-tryout injury.

Betts is out for the FLA and SJ games.

Parent could return before Betts.

Boucher to start against San Jose.

Ummmm....

I don't care that he may know their tendencies because he used to play there; having Boucher play his first game against San Jose is not the smartest idea.

Good god, I hope he proves me wrong.

Especially after they lost to Tampa Bay, granted they play a game before us...but still.

I read somewhere that he lobbied for that game. Whether that was the deciding factor or not, I don't know. I am sure we will be hearing the reasoning at some point this weekend.

Hopefully Boucher wants to prove them wrong for letting him go. But that is a rough way to start your 1st game against Heatley and Thorton.

Frankly I am a bit more worried about the one guy that Boucher hasn't played with, perhaps Emery knows more about Haetley's tendencies...

While it's 'nice' that Boucher believes he'll be up for the San Jose challenge, I am entirely uncomfortable knowing that he'll be in net for that game. Having his first start against Florida is much more reasonable; a four point weekend is all that matters, though, regardless of who's between the pipes.

I'm sure he'll bring his A-Game, goalies tend to play better against their old teams, besides he's due for a start, i'm ok with it.

I really hope that when Betts comes back that Powe is not sent down.

I think he's showing continued improvement and is contributing in the areas that are expected of him.

When everyone is healthy, I think our biggest worries are injuries and Coburn. Otherwise, I'm excited.

Betts will obviously be able to help the younger guys with faceoffs more, but we're suffering because he's out.

Regards,
Rick

I have only ever been in the situation as a goalie (not a skater), but when I play against good players who are familiar with me (old college players, or decent varsity level guys), I find their familiarity with me helps them more than mine with them. Granted, the holes in my game massive when compared to a professional goalie, but at the same time, Heatley doesn't need much room for error.

- Just my $.02.

For when we're healthy:

Hartnell - Richards - JVR
Briere - Carter - Gagne
Powe - Groiux - Pyorala
Asham - Betts - Lappy

Extra: Cote, Carcillo

Pronger - Carle
Timonen - Coburn
Parent - Syvret

Extra: Tollefsen

I think that's a significantly better roster than todays. The addition of Betts just allows the bottom 6 to shape up and allow the top 6 to take shape. I like a Hartnell - Richards - JVR top line with Briere - Carter - Gagne line that has almost as many minutes. On the 3rd line, Powe and Asham could be switched

Betts update...

Quote:
Flyers forward Blair Betts took part in full-contact drills today, and could return by Saturday’s game. He has been out since October 6 when he suffered a dislocated right shoulder in the home-opener against the Capitals.

Quote:
The Flyers are banking that Betts and Ryan Parent, who have been sidelined with injuries, are ready to return to the lineup Saturday against Carolina. That would eliminate the need for Holmgren to recall anyone else from the Phantoms.

Breakaways. Blair Betts (shoulder) took contact yesterday and, unless there are setbacks, he and defenseman Ryan Parent (groin) will return from injuries Saturday afternoon against visiting Carolina. . ..
