Wow.... that was nice... I wasn't expecting anything like this.

Another PP goal and Brind'Amour with his second this season

Memories of our great marketing campaigns of the past. THIS is hockey... they just forgot the question mark at the end of the statement that year.

Well, I was going to say this was a good night so far, with the Canes just tied after 2 and ECU up.

But then Hartman gets another field goal blocked (2nd of the night) and it's returned for a touchdown. Yay

Do mine eyes decieve me? Is that two power play goals we've scored tonight? What a great time for my Fox Sports South to decide to show College Football instead.

(by the way, if anyone knows a contact number for them that I can call and grumble at, by all means please share)

While we are on this topic, I was at the ECU APP game....they almost pulled a Canes level choke job. We are lucky to be going into the third tied.

But to get back to the game, anyone interested in the Apex saga that Tripp keeps bringing up?

1 for 9 on the season, though it was close.

That blows....

Goal and the penalty to kill. I am thinking we can call it a night.

Malone has become another Cane killer all of the sudden.

I'm just gonna go ahead and close my 99.9 The Fan tab. I swear, not 5 seconds after the stream starts the Bolts score.

HMPH!

I'm going to be brooding tonight. Anyone else interested in brooding with me can come to the corner. Tonights topic of brooding is the Hurricanes defense. What can they do to be better? Do they suck, are they just okay, or are they above average but playing below average?

We need Joni, that's all it comes down to for me.

Joni is one of our top 3 defensemen from a purely defensive perspective and he's arguably just as good as Corvo from an offensive perspective, if not better. Joni is the best player on our blueline at handling and advancing the puck, Joni is the best skater on our blueline. We're now 1-3 with him out of the lineup, I don't think that's a coincidence. The sooner he is better the sooner the team can get back on the right track.

I wouldn't say our defense sucks. I would say our defense is a #1 defenseman (Joni), 3 guys that could qualify as #3 defensemen (Corvo, Ward, Gleason), Alberts as a legit #5, and a bunch of options that are depth guys for #6. When you take away one of the #3s, but have all the other parts, you can have a decent defense. But when you take away the #1 what you get is what we saw tonight and in Boston.

I was watching the Canes game and the ECU game at the same time with Picture-in-Picture. It was like failboat in stereo...

I still think it all boils down to the lack of another spark on offense outside of Staal. With Cole out of the line-up, we're right back to where we were in the first half of last season with Samsonov out of his league on the first-line. Not that I think the return of Cole will solve the problem. This is an issue that has needed to be addressed for the past couple of years.

Well a great way to start off the GDT standings for me. I could drag up the old thread but I think I was something like 3rd or 4th best last year. Looks like it's the bottom feeders' time to shine this year... except for AQ she just gets it done no matter what. Kinda my bad that I sorta stole it from her a bit. Anyway I didn't get to watch the game since there was no feed on either side. Sometimes living in Japan sucks. I think we should make a play for Hemsky. That's all I'm gonna say. I don't know what it would take but I'd love to see him on Staal's wing and his contract is great. I'm starting this thought early so when JR reads this post tomorrow he'll have tons of time to pull the trigger.

Payce y'all

and Alberts is tied with Ovechkin for most hits in the league with 20

Well last night was, quite simply, a major fail on the part of both the Canes AND ECU, but im not here to discuss football so.....yeah, i didnt have a good feeling about this game from the start. I was pretty sure we were gonna get beat, but I never thought we would actually have a chance to win at any point in the game. As much as the game the other night against the Bolts was a trap game, so was this one, except in this one, we actually took the bait and choked. 2 PP goals? that was nice. Brindy has a 2-game goal streak going, so that is a positive, and Jokinen has his team leading 5 points all in the last 3 games.....another positive. Yelle, LaRose, Alberts the only 3 who have played all 5 games and do NOT have a point. Staal and Ward are a -3, that's not good, but Walker is a +4 and Brindy is still on the + side with a +2.

but.....all of that is just stats...they can only represent so much. our defense hasn't looked too good, although i have to say that personally, I really like Harrison. Yeah, he is a newbie, with only playing 20 NHL games, all with the Leafs, dating back to 2005 (only 2 assists in that time, and a +3), but I personally like his play so far. I may get heckled for that one but....its one of things where I like what I see but cant really put it into words so...yeah lol.

We really need Pitkanen back. I know that for sure.

And that right there is a MAJOR problem to me. Pitkanen and Corvo are the only two true puck movers we have on the blueline, so when one of the two is out an incredible ammount of physical stress is going to be put on the other by demanding such a high ammount of playing time. With the way things have worked out so far with Pitkanen being out for 4 of 5 games I kindof wish Rodney had been the one to win the #7 spot in camp. Defensively Harrison is definitely better, but Rodney is much better offensively and it would reduce the huge icetimes for Corvo. And the thing is that I like what Harrison has brought to the team so far this season.

The problem with Corvo playing so much is he's nowhere near as defensively responsible as Pitkanen. Joni's the only one that's got a nice balance of offense and defense. He can outlet pass and play solid defensive hockey.

Corvo's got the offense down, but some of his defensive decisions are facepalm-worthy. And the rest of the defense is alright defensively, but can't contribute offensively (despite Ward and Gleason getting PP time).
