10/13: Modano and Ott

Quote:
Injury update: Coach Marc Crawford said Steve Ott (oblique muscle) would probably be out at least one week, but he didn’t have an definitive update following practice. Not much new on Mike Modano (rib). He worked out today and was a matter of how his body responds.
http://www.andrewsstarspage.com/inde...ctice_update5/

The team isn't calling up a forward right now, but if Modano hasn't made progress by Friday, I'm guessing they'd call someone up to travel to Chicago. However, the Texas Stars do play @ Houston on Saturday so they may not want to take a game away from a prospect just to sit in the pressbox.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I imagine they'll have to call someone up. They play 4 games in the next 6 days, and they only have 12 healthy forwards. Ideal situation, IMO, would be to call some up on Thursday, let them play Friday and Saturday, and send them back down on Sunday. Barch, Petersen, and Sutherby can rotate the three scratches.

After the first big camp cut, Crawford said the players left would probably serve as the primary injury callups. Those guys were:

Quote:
Forwards: Beaudoin, Gagnon, Gazdic, Sawada, and Wathier
Defensemen: Fortunus, Hutchinson, Jancevski, Stafford, and Vishnevskiy
Goal: Climie and Krahn
Gazdic and Sawada are injured so I'm going to guess Aaron Gagnon. Beaudoin doesn't have a contract, and honestly, I just don't like Wathier .... lol.

Gagnon can center the 4th line for 2 games.

He's not actually injured, just taking the weakling cowards way out.

Mike Modano was on the ice before Wednesday's morning skate. The next step is for Modano, who said he is feeling better as he recovers from a rib injury, to practice with the team. That could come in the next few days.

Brad Richards out with a sore groin that has bothered him since training camp. They're giving him 3 days of rest (not skating Sunday-Tuesday).

Steve Ott will go through a full practice tomorrow, and he said on the Ticket that he wants to play on the road trip.

Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen are still sore, didn't skate, and are out tonight.

I never expected Modano to be out this long.

Well .... it could stretch 4 more games.

Another update on Twitter from Mark said Modano and Lehtinen may not even travel with the team on the 3 game road trip.

Geeez. That must be some broken rib. I guess the older you get the harder it is to come back from something like that.

I bet Niskanen has a Grade 1 (possibly Grade 2, depending on his history) concussion. That injury is ideally a week of rest after the concussion symptoms go away. But hockey players are stupid, so if it's just a Grade 1, he might be back in a few days.

A few days still means he misses probably two games with as many games as we're playing in the later half of this month and early next month.

No need to rush him back. With concussions being one of the worst injuries to sustain, I see no need to rush a young guy like him back and risk further injuring himself.

Beside, he's hasn't been one of our better d-men this year anyways. He can sit out for a few games.

From Mark @ Andrew's Twitter, Mike Modano and Matt Niskanen are practicing.

From ESPN Dallas:

Quote:
FRISCO -- Stars center Mike Modano (cracked ribs) is practicing with the team at Dr Pepper StarCenter in Frisco. Brad Richards (groin) is not skating and is getting treatment in the training room.

Modano is taking Richards' place on the line with James Neal and Loui Eriksson.

We'll find out what Modano's condition is and whether this is just an off day for Richards to rest once practice is over.

So ..... Mike Modano could return Friday. With 2 great centers and 2 good to very good centers (depending on the night), what’s your best guess for lines Friday?

James Neal - Brad Richards (with an “S” on his chest) – Loui Eriksson
Brenden Morrow – Mike Ribeiro – Jamie Benn
Brian Sutherby – Mike Modano – Toby Petersen
Krys Barch – Tom Wandell – Fabian Brunnstrom

Jere Lehtinen may be teasing us, but he’s supposedly close too.

What I want:
Brian Sutherby/Toby Petersen-Mike Modano-Jere Lehtinen
Steve Ott – Tom Wandell – Fabian Brunnstrom

What I think will happen:
Steve Ott-Mike Modano-Jere Lehtinen
Toby Petersen/Krys Barch – Tom Wandell – Fabian Brunnstrom/Toby Petersen

Eventually, Lehtinen will go down again, and Sutherby or Brunnstrom will find the press box so ultimate hockey deity Krys Barch can play. I tried to like him …. but I just can’t do it.

What about moving Wandell to a wing temporarily for Friday and going with Wandell-Mo-Brunnstrom and then a real 4th line behind them?

I would say no because he's been great at center. Moving him to wing makes the team weaker because he's clearly better than Petersen or Sutherby in the middle.

Playing Wandell and Modano at center gives Dallas 4 legitimate lines instead of 3 and a group of spares.

Meh, it'd only be one game. I'm trying to think of things to get Fabian going. He's done pretty well with Wandell in the all-around game, but maybe Modano can help him in the goal dept.

And Petersen at center doesn't make the 4th line non-legitimate or something.

I guess it's worth mentioning here that Neal and Morrow also apparently have abdominal/groin "issues" along with Richards, so that's something to keep an eye on.

Let's hope none of this turns into hernia issues. We don't need that.

From Mark @ Andrew's, practice lines were:

Morrow-Ribeiro-Lehtinen
Ott-Modano-Benn
Sutherby-Wandell-Brunnstrom
Neal-Petersen-Barch

Modano said he's ready to go, and Lehtinen said he hopes to play. Eriksson has the flu, and Richards was given the day off for rest. Fistric took a puck off his ankle in practice, had to be helped off the ice, and his status is unknown.

I like the moves Crawford made. I don't know if they should be permanent, but Ribs line needed a shakeup. Plus, Benn and Modano already have some chemistry. Hopefully these are the lines with see against Calgary. Well obviously, with Richards and Eriksson in the mix.
