New First Line

According to Brent Wallace...

Cheechoo playing with Spezza and michalek today. Shannon in for Regin.

I have been waiting to see this happen ever since Alfredsson moved with Fisher and Kovalev.

About time!

Cheechoo isn't showing up on the scoreboard, well neither is Spezza and Michalek, but all have played well at both ends of the ice, it will be nice to see them start to be rewarded and put up some points. Hopefully this line clicks, we'd be a pretty scary team if this and our "2nd" line start producing.

I'm so bummed that Regin is out. That guy has easily been our best forward so far this year.

As important as it was to get a guy like Kovalev going(who has the reputation of going when he wants to) does anyone feel its more important to get Spezza, Michalek, Foligno going?? Those are 3 guys who need to put up top 6 points and are hard workers where as Kovalev is a fly by the seat of his vintage pants kind of guy

Thats what this move does. Foligno didnt get Spezza and Michalek going so Clouston is giving Cheechoo the chance, and Foligno had alot of success last year playing with Shannon so this is exactly what this does. IMO, Foligno fits better on the thrid line then he does on the first.

Foligno is a borderline top 6 player at the moment. I'm not sure Cheechoo will be able to do much on the top line, but he's been getting better every game so it's worth a shot.
To me the main issue is that Michalek and Spezza seem to have 0 chemistry even though both players have been pretty good on their own. Still too early to tell for certain however.

We don't necessarily need Foligno to get going. He's a 3rd liner on this team, nothing more really. He's been a pretty big disappointment thus far.

Michalek and Spezza obviously need to start producing, but everyone knows that will happen at some point.

He uses a Reebok with a wooden blade most of the time now. He was using a white Sherwood in the preseason though.

What color was the shaft? Black or White?

I like this move, Michalek-Spezza-Cheechoo has the potential to be one of the best 2nd lines in the league!

Been hoping to see this since the preseason! If Cheechoo can't produce with a centre like Spezza he deserves to be on the third line.

Come on Cheech, this is your chance!

Could a Cheechoo-Spezza-Kovalev line work? Spezza and Kovalev could make crazy plays with each other and maybe Cheechoo finds his scoring touch back and finishes the plays on that line. Then when Regin comes back he could play with Michalek and Alfie and we can reunite FFS.

Anyway, I'm excited to see how this line works tonight. IIRC, when someone put up the Michalek video once we had acquired him, I remember seeing Cheechoo on the ice for most of the goals. I could be totally wrong, but if true, maybe they already have some chemistry playing with each other.

That is probably the next thing to try if the MSC line doesn't click.

Good stuff. It looks like Spezza needs a good finisher on his line to get going. I'd like to see Spez shoot more though, and become the main goal scorer on his line. This line makes a lot more sense IMO than having Foligno play the right side. Now Cheechoo is playing his natural position on an elite play maker's line. If Cheech can find his Chong than this team is going to be quite lethal offensively.

can someone who's followed cheechoo tell me why he's regressed so much since his breakout season? I really don't understand how a 50 goal scorer could falter so much in such little time

a) breakout season had a lot to do with thornton, + defenses/opposing coaches not planning for cheechoo enough.
b) cheechoo had injury problems
c) cheechoo then stopped playing with thornton.

If healthy, i think cheechoo can be a 25-30 goal player, but to expect anything close to his 56 goal season is crazy.

A combinations of things.

- Got the injury bug....

- Then got placed on the 3rd line in SanJose after coming off his injury to progressively work back into the lineup.

- Saw players jump ahead of him on the depth chart.
ex) Setoguchi, Clowe, Pavelski, Michalek

- Lost the quality of his linemates playing on the 3rd line.

- Lost confidence in his scoring ability, and powerplay time.

These would be the most balanced top two lines if Cheechoo can score some goals.

I think any line that has two of the three Alfredsson/Spezza/Kovalev will score so goals. It's a matter of finding another line that will produce.

Kovalev - Fisher - Alfredsson will produce but the question is will Michalek and Cheechoo be able to score some goals. If those two guys can get scoring the team will be in good shape IMO.

You just don't quit.

I really do think this could be a dangerous line though. Both wingers have the ability to bury the puck. With the way our bottom forwards are playing right now we look deep and dangerous from top to bottom.

I love this move.

IMO Spezza has looked better this year than he ever has before other than the cup run when he was easily our 2nd best player. This year it just looks like he's faster, stronger, killing penalties, using his body... the results will come, it's only a matter of time.

Someone said Clouston expected him to play in the game on Thursday. It's supposed to be upper body and doesn't seem too serious from what I know.
