1994-born age group

I thought that it would be a good time to start a thread that would follow the progress of this age group, during the next few seasons.

- The Average height of these players is 177.8 cm.
- The Average weight of these players is 71.3 kg.
-> This team is clearly bigger than some of the preceding age groups at this age. Hopefully this means that there are more NHL calibre prospects, especially defensemen because there hasn’t been too many of those lately.

The coaches often dress the best available line-up to the 3rd game against Germany, so hopefully that will be the case this year as well, so that we can get some kind of a overall picture of the pecking order of this age group.

Don't know, but I assume that the family has lived in the Greater Stockholm area for his whole life. Torniainen played for Huddinge IK before moving to Djurgården and if I remember correctly, his father used to coach him there.

Torniainen has started the season well. He's the second best scorer of his team (8gp. 9+4=13) and is also one the youngest players of his team (U18).

btw. The 4 most promising defensemens in this age group are all over 180cm tall already (Määttä, Piisinen, Ristolainen & Pokka).

Joonas has a younger brother that's playing in JYP, but if I recall correctly he's playing in their D-96 team. Of course Topi could be related to Joonas as well.

Olli Määttä played his first game in Mestis last night and he got his first point already (0+1)! He played 7 minutes and 42 seconds and he shot six time. In A-juniors he have played 6 game and his stats is 1+0. Average icetime is about 20 minutes. Määttä seems to be pretty good prospect and he is also big guy (6'1 183 lbs) which is something not so finnish.

There is some other interesting prospects too for example Oskari Lehtinen (6'0 183 lbs) and Ville Pokka (6'0 187 lbs).

F Lehtinen 3g 1+1 (A-juniors) and 2g 2+4 (B-juniors)
D Ville Pokka 5g 0+2 (A-juniors) Average icetime: 24:07 !

BTW does anyone know where the hell Rasmus Ristolainen is? Injured I assume but what's wrong with him?

Kalle Torniainen is 10gp 6+11 17p so far in the Swedish J18-Elit for Djurgårdens IF.

He was selected for the Finnish U18-national team for the 4-nations tournament this weekend as well.

Is there any chance that Torniainen would play in Superelit in this year?

I don't think so. That's not because he lacks quality, but because DIF-J20 have a really stacked team this season.

Thanks! That's bad but luckily swedish U18 serie is way better than finnish so he gets tough games there.

Btw does someone know can Tornianen represent Finland at U18 WJC? As an example Jesse Turkulainen didn't got represent Finland in 2008 because he wasn't been played in finnish series.

WU18C's and WJC's are IIHF events and have stricter eligibility rules. LINK to rules.

Turkulainen was a Swedish citizen who acquired a new citizenship, so the ‘two-year’ rule prevented him from taking part to the WU18C's as a Finn. If Torniainen has been a Finnish citizen for his whole life, he'll be eligible to play for Finland at the WU18C's.

Torniainen is making his debute for the DIF U20-team as we speak, shows what I know sometimes...

He is the first skater born 1994 to represent the DIF U20.

Big bump for this thread but D-man Rasmus Ristolainen is gonna play his first SM-liiga game today. He was called up from juniors because TPS has pretty much one full line or more in a fever and they already have many other players out due to long term injuries.

Panu Satama - Jokerit
Kalle Torniainen - Djurgårdens IF
Nico Friman - Jokerit

according to eurohockey HIFK signed these 4 players yesterday, all born in 1994 except panu satama
Kalle Torniainen might be the best 1994-born forward and I think he's now possible second rounder in the 2012 draft. He was also MVP of the Pohjola camp in 2009. Really interesting prospect and I'm glad that he chose IFK.
