He did a good deal for hockey and deserves to be mentioned, even if he isn't the best.
good choice

My bad...but still. I think this thread should stick mainly to forwards. Its still pretty damn rare when a defensman gets 100 points. Its something that we will probably never see again.

I don't think stats are all you can go by when searching for the "best" player never to reach 100 points. Sure maybe a guy got 96 points in his best year and another "only" got 50 or so, but does that really make the guy who got 96 points better? Of course not, because there is more to look at. Leadership is one thing, what they gave back to the game is another.

Personally I think these are the "best" players to never reach 100 points (in no particular order) and why:

1. Art Ross- one of the best leaders on his teams, introduced a better net and puck for the league, arguaably the Bruins best coach, and to top it all off he was a realyl good defenseman during his time.

2. Maurice Richard- First player to score 50 goals in 50 games, won the cup 8 times, turned the Montreal Canadiens into a force to be reckoned with, and helped create an offensive era (which seems to be in need of a revival).

3. Ray Bourque- named the Bruins captain in the 88-89 season, truly loved playing with and teaching younger players, one of the best modern defensemen, and was one of the main reasons the Avs won the cup in '01.

These men all love(d) hockey. They didn't play for money or fame. They played because the game meant more to them than almost anything else in their lives.

Sorry I included two defensemen. Maybe another thread needs to be started for defensemen?

Defenseman have a right to be in this thread, but I can see your argument. I would rather have a Chelios in prime than many of the players in this thread(with the exception of Bourque, Beliveau, Richard and players that are legends and left a mark on the game obviously)

Kharlomov deserves mention. Also Bob Gainey.

Here is a name from the past that deserves to be up here (IMO): Don Marcotte. Never a big scorer (although he did have one 30 goal season), but he was the consumate two-way forward.

The best never to reach it might very well be Maurice Richard. The Rocket was a total force.

Kharlamov was amazing...He definitely gets my vote. I tried looking for stats on him earlier today, but all I could find was either talking about Kovalchuk and how much he admires him or it wasn't in English.
