Faceoff statistics, a tale of two seasons

2008-2009:
- Coyotes ranked 30th in the league winning only 44.8% of their faceoffs.
- Hanzal 48.3%
- Reinprecht 46.3%
- Turris 42.9%
- Jokinen 42.2%
[min 500 FO's]
- Short Handed faceoffs 199/503 39.6%, main SH faceoff guy: Hanzal 99/251 39.4%

2009-2010:
- Coyotes currently ranked 6th in the league winning 52.8% of faceoffs
- Fiddler 61.7% [5th in NHL]
- Lombardi 59.1% [11th in NHL]
- Lang 47.9%
- Hanzal 47.2%
[min 50 FO's]
- Short Handed faceoffs: 17/34 50%, main SH faceoff guy: Fiddler 14/23 60.9%

I can't overstate how much of a difference this faceoff improvement has made for the team in the early season. I'd like to also formally retract my headscratching moment when DM signed Fiddler.

Some other interesting Stats are:
Jovo is tied for 2nd in the league among Dmen for goals with 3.
Michalek has only 6 Blocked shots thus far. Last year he led the league in this regard. The current league leader is Jay Mckee with 28.
Yandle only has 3 shots to this point. And is a team worst -3.
Vrbata is 4th in the League for shots on goal averaging between 4 and 5 shots per game. Ovechkin leads this category averaging 8.
Phx is 5th league wide for least amount of shots given up per game.

We knew about the face-offs with Fiddler, but he's proving to be an outstanding energy two-way forward who's not afraid to lay on a hit.

Not only that but also players like Upshall Lombardi and Fiddler were playing on team where they felt they had no importance to whatsoever with little or no playing time. Now that there players are playing on a team where they have a chance to maximize their potential both as an individual player and part of a team but also taking advantage of being in a position of high accountability in case none of them ever get this type of chance with another team again.

My guess is with the improved defense and goaltending as well as less shots on goal, Michalek doesn't feel the need to throw himself in front of so many pucks.

Here's another interesting stat: Phoenix has the least amount of goals allowed (10), the next lowest are Buffalo and Columbus (12), and they each have one less game played.

I'm quite alright with Michalek not killing himself by blocking 8 million shots. Last season I thought it really wore on him later on. I want a player who is still functional for the Yotes to resign/extend.
