The Flu v. Kings 10/17/09

Ugh.

This was painful to watch. I know the team is sick, on the road, whatever, but this just sucked. This is the third game in a row where we've come out great in the first, let off in the second, and completely folded in the third. Little fight seen in this team over the past three games.

Hope for a bounce back in Dallas, because I can't take another 3 game win streak, 3 game losing streak, mediocre .500 season.

We went from looking awesome to the worst team in our division in 3 games.

We've looked terrible all week, including the game against the Isles. Change up the lines next game. Work on the PP. Sit Ivanans.

It is clear now why the Kings are suffering from the flu. They have an allergy to good passing. Watching other teams make crisp first and second passes over the last several games has weakened the Kings immunity to mount a comeback. Their own inability to connect a pass and calm the game down sealed their fate long before Rick Nash scored a short-handed goal or Jakub Voracek (who is possibly the most hideous looking player since Mike Ricci) put the game away with an empty net goal.
I couldn't write that post game fast enough. I need to find something harder than drywall to smash my head against.

The only saving grace is that if they win on Monday, it's a .500 road trip, and the longest road trip of the year is out of the way. They really do need to win Monday though. 3-3 is a hell of a lot more palatable than 2-4.

Getting match-up's against two white-hot teams (NY and Columbus) and one team we can never beat (Detroit) isn't helping matters. The Kings should have no trouble beating Dallas (assuming the flu hasn't stricken half the team come Monday).

Whole team looked sick.
Should have brought a few more guys from Manchester with Moller. Frolov did not have a good game.
Brown played well.

Quick was outstanding.

If you are going to have a power play and have a forward playing on the point, make sure to teach him how to not get toe dragged and undressed leading to a nail in the coffin goal.

Both 2 on 1 goals were painful to watch.

Being a Kings' fan for the past 17 years, I've come to accept losing. However, its the way we lost the last few games that bothers me.

Last season, even though we were teh suck, you could tell they went down fighting. Games were close, the team was physical and on most nights gave a really good effort.

While it's only been a few games into the season, I just don't see that 'fight' in the team. Kopitar is getting roughed up a bit with very little response. The team that was 2nd in hits last year, looks almost afraid to initiate contact.

The game plan this year seems to be: expend all their energy trying to get the puck out of the defensive zone, dump it into the offensive zone and cycle the puck in circles until the opposition steals it. Rinse and repeat.

It's early. No panic.. yet. But something isn't right on this team.

Oh, and Scuderi isn't worth 3m a year.

he's not smiling, he always does that thing with his mouthguard that makes it look like he is.

Terrible game - worst since opening night. 2nd straight bad game by Smyth which really worries me. Ridiculous to say this early but the next game is almost a must win.

We should have dumped and chased more. That was the problem. Dump and chase more boys.

It may not be Terry. I don't know. They didn't do this in the SJ and SL game. It started in the NYI game and then carried over from there. It was almost like the team had a complete shift in style.

I wrote a little article on the DUMP and CHASE enigma that has permeated into the Kings game on this road trip with some relevant background info. Click below to read.

I've noticed that, too. The only remotely plausible conclusion I could come up with is that we're on the road and Murray isn't getting the match ups he wants. But I'm really getting sick of watching our first line attempt to grind it out when trailing by a goal in the third period. Kopitar is a world class playmaker, goalscorer, you name it. He's breaking out this year for a reason. For ****'s sake let him make a play. Enough of the dump and chase **** when we're trailing. It's GREAT to protect a lead - dump, chase, cycle, wear the opposition down. I get it. But you have to turn your best players loose when you need a goal. Everyone talks about going out and signing "the guy" - the gamebreaking Kovalchuk or Heatley or whoever that can score a goal when we need it.

New flash: we have that guy. We have a gamebreaker. His name is Anze Kopitar. CUT. HIM. LOOSE.

If I were Frolov I'd find a new way to chew on my mouth guard.
