Greg De Vries for 7th defenseman

Obviously the young guys are doing a tremendous job but neither Gilroy or Del Zotto have played an 82 game season. As a defensive corps filled with rookies and only two players over the age of 31, it would be ideal that this team brings in a 7th defenseman so that the rookies can be given a game off down the stretch, and also just to have a spare in case of injury.

I would propose that the Rangers sign Greg De Vries to a one year deal. Don't know how much money he would be looking for and I know we don't have much cap room left, but I think it would be important/beneficial to do this.

He's not signed anywhere? Yeah, I would go for that.

I don't know enough about De Vries' character or his probable salary demands to make a proper judgement on him, so I'll leave that to the rest of the board.

Having said that, I still am in favor of bringing in Chelios, for the following reasons:
  • I still feel he could play the limited minutes that would be required of a 7th d-man;
  • He's fiercely determined to prove himself right now;
  • He's a high character individual who would certainly be a positive influence on our younger players;
  • He's a winner, who knows what it takes to be part of a winning team; and
  • He'll play for next to nothing.

It doesn't seem that Sather is seriously considering him though.

He was here once already, and from what I recall, he hated it here.

He can choose between unemployment, or making 750K and playing hockey.

I wouldn't say that. While not an all-star, DeVries is a fairly solid defenseman and wasn't terrible here. The whole team was bad and he wasn't going to carry the team on his shoulders.

Well, according to RDS, you guys just signed Dandenault to a 25-game tryout in the AHL.

Hockeydb has him listed as a RW for some reason. Is he one of those hybrid players like Strudwick and Brian Boyle?

Better version of Strudwick is how i would describe him. Havent seen him play defense in a while though.

If you're talking about Dandenault, yes he can play up front and on D. He was more regularly used on the fourth line in his last year with Montreal, and is actually pretty good there. He's also pretty good on D, and not afraid to help out the offense.

Very solid 7th guy/4th-liner, surprised he hasn't already been signed...

Last season, didnt he mainly play on the 4th line though? I remember him playing defense for one game and that was it although I only caught 30-35 games.

Yeah, that's what I meant. In his last year with Montreal (last season), he was mostly used on the fourth line, how ever he's also definitely reliable as a defenseman as well. I was never a huge fan of him but he's a reliable player who plays with a lot of intensity.

Hopefully he makes his way up to the big team.

In juniors he was playing forward but they converted him to a defenseman in Detroit

During his 2 first years with Montreal, he was only playing D but during his two last year he switch between Forward and D.

I think that he prefers to play defense.

we should bring back Bryan Berard if we're going to bring anyone back. Or get Thomas Pock to come back to the NHL, he'd thrive under Torts as a third pair d-man.

signed Dandenault to a PTO to Hartford.

I imagine unless he severely blows he's the 7th Dman which makes sense

500K tops

Funny how we take SJ old 7th Dman and now the gut who they did'nt give a contract too this year

He is fast and all he needs to do is practice and sub in here and their

can play the Wing too which is a bonus cause Voros stinks

He was hanging out at the Metallica show in Nashville last month, I saw him there...looks to be in great shape, surprised someone didn't add him as an extra d-man...
