Matt Duchene vs Evander Kane (Calder Discussion)

How come I keep hearing Duchene's name mentioned in Calder discussions but not Kane's?

Kane has 4 points (2g, 2a) in 6 games and is a +3 with a season high TOI of 14:38, including a huge GWG against the Blues, and at least 2 minutes of PK duty a night.

Duchene has 4 points (1g, 3a) in 8 games and is a -4 with a season high TOI of 19:45.

So basically Kane has been more productive in less time and fewer games.

Del Zotto
Tavares
Benn
Kane
Hedman

is how I see it right now, with Ryan O'Reilly in there somewhere, just haven't seen him play yet.

Sorry if this seems kind of random, just noticed the Calder poll on TSN's front page had Duchene in there over Kane and thought it was silly. Almost as silly as talking Calder in week 3, but hey, they've gotta start somewhere.

I still think Tavares wins the Calder.

Del Zotto's off to a great start though.

Because Duchene has hype. As the season progresses, if he lags behind the field he'll fade from the discussion. Which is a silly one, at any rate, this early into things.

I've seen 3 Atlanta games so far and I liked him a lot. Definitely deserves to be in conversation for the Calder.

3rd liners do not win Calders.

Kane is doing a terrific job for the Thrashers, he is part of the reason why the Thrashers PK has practically gone from worst to first. His line with Armstrong and Peverley has been the Thrashers best line so far this year. He is doing a great job fighting for pucks along the boards, and is not afraid of giving or taking a hit.

I just don't think the role he is filling for the Thrashers right now is going to provide him with enough "star power" to rise above kids like Duchene or Tavares.

Because everyone is bored and are talking about the Calder when 10 games haven't passed.

Del Zotto is leading the way as of now, not to take anything away from Kane(as a Leaf fan, I would take him over Kadri), but I feel Duchene will be miles ahead by the end of the season
IMO, but I have been wrong numerous times

The ovious answer as to why he isn't talked about in the Calder discussion is the fact that he plays with Rich Peverley. Playing with Peverley makes anyone good. Peverley for Calder.

I've been on the Kane bandwagon for ages.

I've thought all along that he should have been the #3 pick behind only JT and Hedman.

Tavares will likely take the calder, though. I'd say Hedman and Kane are #2 and #3.

DelZotto's looked great (good thing for my pool, too), but I doubt he keeps up this kind of pace all year.

Didn't Gomez win the Calder while centering the Devils 3rd line in 99-00? Or was he on the second?

As of this moment in time, it's a 2 horse race between the NY guys, with Del Zotto holding an edge over Tavares.

Duchene has played better than his numbers indicate, and could have quite a few more points than he does now. I think he'll finish ahead of Kane in the rookie points race by a good bit.

Frankly I've been more impressed with Duchene, and that may be the case with everybody touting him as a Calder candidate. Kane has also been very good, and there's a reason they give these awards out after the season is over. We'll see.

Patrick Kane? I think he already got his Calder a couple of years ago.

I'd say Duchene has it to lose at this point. Not taking anything away from Kane, but Colorado will give Duchene that much more press
