Austin Lemieux will decide between playing for Canada, the US and newly seperated Quebec. Whoever has him wins the whole thing.

The only players that I can think of as virtual locks (barring injury) are Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin and Kopitar. The first three, obviously, are world class and even if not still scoring prolifically in the NHL (though they likely will be), will be solid veteran leaders that their national teams would absolutely include. The last, Kopitar, is largely because there isn't anyone else from Slovenia who is even close to his talent level. Of course, the Slovenian team has never qualified for the Olympics, so it's very much not a sure thing that they'll even be there in 2018. You never know, though; more Slovenian kids are likely being drawn into the sport, and a few of them could end up helping Slovenia qualify for 2018. If any other young stars represent similar countries without much NHL representation, they stand a very good chance of being there in 2018, as well (again, as long as their countries qualify).

There are lots of other really good candidates that have been mentioned (ex. Kane, Toews, E. Johnson, Doughty), but competition for their teams is very tough. Even a guy like Getzlaf, who is so good right now, stands a good chance of ending up like Bertuzzi (who, basically, was Getzlaf 8 years ago) by 2018. Bertuzzi's current level isn't so bad; it's just not good enough to make Team Canada. If we think that competition is tough now, imagine what it'll be in 8 years if the flood of great young talent continues.

Of all player positions, easily the most impossible to predict 8 years ahead of time would be goaltender, IMO. Goaltenders are far too inconsistent even season to season (largely because their success has a lot to do with the quality of the team and it's a very "mental" position), much less from one decade to the next. Most very good goaltenders in their early 20s aren't so good 8 years later and most of the few that are very good in their 30s (like Tim Thomas) were not so good or proven 8 years earlier. Also, of course, there's room for only two or three on the roster, which makes it even harder to predict.

I would think that all of these guys will have a good chance. We'll have a studly defense.
Chelios will be the seventh D man.

Backstrom (Was) is a lock imo.

Team Canada 2018

I know it's 4 and 1/2 years away, but just for the heck of it anyone want to take a stab at it?

Mackinnon, Crosby, McDavid.

Fucale might even be ready by then, although it's unlikely.

Will be such a good team.

Crosby
Toews
Giroux
Tavares
Stamkos
Staal
Getzlaf
Bergeron
Nash

Doughty
Weber
Keith
Pietrangelo

Price

Barring injury, these guys will likely be on the team. I'm gonna guess Connor McDavid, Logan Couture, Nathan Mackinnon, Taylor Hall, Ryan Murray, Justin Schultz, Marc-Eduoard Vlasic, Braden Holtby and Jake Allen will be joining them

he will have played 1.5 seasons by then... unlikely but Stamkos had 51 goals 95 pts in his sophomore year. No reason to think he couldnt be as good.
