Correct. Have to all be named by the NHL playoffs...or else!

That's an excellent reminder. I've been swamped at work and haven't been able to get to HF as much as I'd like. I also haven't gotten to the casino as much as I'd like, or far-away places for vacations. I couldn't go see the Dropkick Murphys. Oh, well...

****, I need to go thru the roster and figure out my keepers.

Offhand, I'd say

Ovechkin
Crosby
Miller
Staal
Phaneuf

all make the cut ... Haha

Need to get some names on paper, I suppose, since I may forget...

Tentative Keepers:

Luongo
Kovalchuk (F)
Green
Tavares
Weber
Burrows
Kesler
Varlamov

Bah, hopefully I'll remember to go through this list again. At least it's down, just in case.

Right now I'm leaning towards

Franchise - LW Alex Ovechkin (duh)
C Sidney Crosby (duh)
G Ryan Miller (duh)
C Eric Staal (duh)
D Dion Phaneuf (struggled mightily but best defenseman on my squad)
G Tuukka Rask (young goalie, must keep IMHO)
LW Wojtek Wolski (young, turning into a stud)
C Matt Duchene (can I really afford to give someone else a chance to grab him as he shows his true potential?)

Which means I still have to cut guys like Brad Richards (injury risk, but 80 points), Kris Vertseeg (like him a lot), and Jakub Voracek (like him, but not hitting his potential), Stephen Weiss (meh) and Marty Turco (blah).

Oh well.

That's what I don't like about the 3-year (?) keeper rule. As an example, Duchene won't hit his 'prime' until approx 5 years from now. By that time, you've had to sell him. Same holds true for FireHolmgren with JVR. Perhaps I shouldn't care, but I just think it sucks for you guys.

I agree. The quality of my keepers drops quickly, that's the price I paid for Crosby.

and everyone was telling me I got a steal on Phaneuf and he just SUCKED this year.

Ovechkin + Crosby + Miller = missed playoffs 2nd year in a row.

Oh well, I'll play by the rules, whatever. I expected the 3 year thing when I grabbed Duchene, so while it sucks, it's not exactly a surprise.

Sucks I have to trade a 23 year old (by then) Crosby in a year or so, haha.

I agree with this. I am in another keeper league one that is deeper then this where we keep everyone(its a salary cap league). we are in the playoffs right now of our 4th season.
There is still plenty of trading and transactions.
If we are going to have a 3 year rule, what is the point of a entry draft? you are going to lose a players rights after 3 eyars. Other GM's know this, so what do you think the trade value would be for say Kopitar? Crosby? Ovechkin? Backstrom?
Good luck next season trying to trade guys you will lose at the end of the season. Their value isnt as high as it normally would be.
Also there is the 5 prospect rule limit. Dont agree with this either, especially now where just about everyone is maxed out. What if a guy stays in junior for 3 or 4 seasons? or college? you are ****ed.

Honestly there are sides to every rule. The point of the 3 year keeper rule is to stimulate activity and to make it harder for someone to just dive for picks or players. People cant just sell everything they have for one or two players and say F it I'll suck this season and be good next year when I have X Y and Z plus the #1 pick. I know it sucks to lose players but thats the thing, you CAN trade, so trade someone like JVR in a couple years for a guy like Duchene, that simple. By the way, nobody is going to lose anyone at the end of next season. The rule is you can keep a player 3 times, not you can have him 3 years. After this season it will be the 2nd time you kept a player so you can keep him again next year.

As far as the prospects, do you really have 5 prospects right now that you think will be legit NHL stars so much so that you cant afford to drop them for another prospect if one is better. Most of the prospects people have right now will never be legit fantasy contributors.

Honestly, not everyone is going to like every rule but the facts remain I didnt make them up myself, mostly everything was voted for and the rules that people didn't like that I made myself I changed or had the votes. If people dont like the league then it can end, no big deal.

Honestly, you dont need the 3 year rule to stimulate trading. People are going to trade regardless.
As far as the prospects go of course not. Not everyone is going to have 5 "superstars" in their prospect list.
you can draft players who can help you out down the line. they may not be superstars but they can be good players. Why should I have to drop them? I cant trade my prospect picks, most everyone is or will be maxed out to 5 after the upcoming prosect draft.
So right now I have 5 prospects. Brett Hextall will be dropped. that leaves me with 1 opening. So I am either forced to drop Kassian,Glennie, Bernier or Sanguinetti. Neither of those players I am prepared to drop.
I say we need to increase the prospect pool limit. maybe to 7 or more.

I'm in a salary cap keeper league with a minors team that is BIGGER then the darn NHL team we run.

Trading in that league is insane, people are always trading. Shedding salary, moving old players, packaging to acquire specific youngions.

It's a lot of fun. Each year we draft JUST prospects from the NHL draft into our minors. Problem is it is a lot more intense then this league. People are always dumping salary to fit under the cap and prospects are over-valued because they are cheap. It's fun though.

In my keeper league, the NHL roster has 25 players (16,6,3 or 15,7,3 usually) the AHL has 25 roster spots and we have a junior team that has 10 spots for players who are unsigned. It's NUTS. I own at least 10 players will likely never see the NHL.

You can really compare how active a salary cap keeper league is compared to this one. Players in this league could stockpile a bunch of young players and never let them go without a cap.

I realize that. I am just giving my opinions. Dont think its asking alot to take it to a vote on increasing the pool size of the prospects. I am not asking to increase it to 25 for God sakes. bumping it up to 7 or 8 isnt that big of a deal IMO. If you want to impose a 3 year rule on keeping prospects fine.

I think it's more than just for the USA; the entire pool should be behind you for this one. It would be quite an embarrassment for everyone if Pikachu's team made the finals.
