ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu has been suspended for three games by the NHL for his hit on Darcy Tucker of the Colorado Avalanche in Friday's game in Denver, coach Paul Maurice said today.
The good news:
The Hurricanes are expected to call up Brandon Sutter from the Albany River Rats of the AHL, the team's top minor league affiliate.
I expected him to get suspended, but 3 is too much to me when you consider his lack of history and what other players have received.
As an Avs fan I obviously didn't like the hit or what resulted from it, but I agree that 3 games is a bit much. I don't think he was trying to cream Tucker, it just happened. 1 game would have sufficed. But seeing as how it ended as it did, there isn't going to be much debate regarding the extra 2 games.
3 games has pretty much been the norm over the last year. If they suspect malicious intent it then goes up from 3 but it would appear currently there is a standard suspension for boarding and its 3 games.
Might be worth noting that 3 games is exactly what Orpik got for smashing Cole during the cup run.
Personally i thought when Ruutu commited to the hit he had Darcy lined up from the side. Im not saying darcy turned late but he turned after Ruutu commited and noone is stopping on skates, though he could have let up a bit. But i must say it is a little hard for me to feel that bad for Darcy, not exactly the angel type though i do hope he recovers quickly.
Don't like it but I get why I guess. 3 games with no history and it didn't look intentional at all. I was at the game, went home and watched the replay. Didn't look one quarter a bad as i thought it would. He just pushed him into the boards, he wasn't at the four foot death range, it didn't look malicious at all to me.
And for the record on the av feed he clearly was awake and talking to trainer from the get go, don't know why the articles say he was out till they took him off the ice.
It was a fair punishment. Regardless of intent, it was late and a hit from behind. Apparently Tucker got around 40 stitches and will be out around 10 days. Can't say I feel bad for him, he was 20 times the dirtier player in TO. You reap what you sow.
Anyways, I can't wait to watch Coach's Corner tonight. I'm pretty sure Cherry will be broken down to tears from watching his golden boy go down.
