So after a few months, does anyone know where he is?

nope. Yzerman said he was going to talk to all the players, so it's possible they've met already but I guess we won't know until free agency to see if he is returning.

Am really hoping that the hiring of Boucher and his up-tempo style will entice Ranger to want to return (along with the opportunity to play under Yzerman) - his skill set sounds like it would be well matched to the new systems that will be put in place.

Wish Ranger the best, and hope to see him in a Lightning sweater come training camp.

This.

All Toronto media does is rip on the Lightning. In the summer of 2008, there was an article every day in the Toronto Star poking fun at our ownership, our players, and our fans. TSN is notorious for this as well.

Uh, Toronto should look at their own teams: Raptors, Blue Jays, Leafs. Why are there even sports teams there, it's cursed.

Posted this in the Yzerman becomes GM thread...but I guess it can be posted here as well:

Quote:
Yzerman hit a bunch of topics on Wednesday:

* He said he has not spoken to defenseman Paul Ranger, who missed almost all of last season due to an undisclosed personal matter, but he intends to send a qualifying contract offer to Ranger to retain his negotiating rights. It would seem that Ranger, a good passer from the defensive zone, would be a fit in coach Guy Boucher's offense, which thrives on pushing the puck forward. Qualifying offers must be sent out by June 28. Lightning players who likely won't be qualified, making them free agents, are center Chris Lawrence, right wing Lauri Tukonen and left wing Radek Smolenak.

But is there still any explanation to his 'personal leave'?

I would also like to see Ranger back in the NHL (for selfish fantasy hockey reasons)...

Did he keep in shape? WHAT WAS HE DOING?

Nobody knows. The only people that I'm guessing know anything are upper management and probably certain league officials. During last season even his teammates didn't know, and probably still don't

We try not to speculate, he's asked for privacy.

At the beginning of the year, no, he had lost a bit of muscle mass but that is expected in the upper body after a shoulder injury.

Word towards the end of the year, though, was that he was working out again and making a point to stay in shape.

Do we want Walker playing more than 5 minutes a game? Too bad he couldn't have been packaged off w/ Meszaros to Philly...

I feel like Ranger is coming back... I mean weird that Yzerman trades Meszaros (yes to free up cap space, but creates a hole as well) and they were never really serious about bringing Foster back (even if it was just because of $). They didn't get a defenseman today, although they still could in the weeks ahead. But I don't know, feels like he might be returning...
Yzerman also said that he's going to go ahead as if Ranger will be returning...

Yzerman said he spoke earlier this week to Ranger, who missed most of last season due to undisclosed personal issues. But Yzerman said Ranger "is not prepared to make a decision one way or another at this time." Ranger's agent also declined comment.

Breaking news: Yzerman makes phone call in past week.

filler story is filler.

The fact that he's not even mentally set on coming back or not, after about 9 months of this, tells me he doesn't like to play the sport enough. Whether other factors led to his leave of absence, I can't say, but there's got to be a lack of passion to not even hint at having a desire to eventually return.

They all know how this game's played. Ranger will get ripped on by people like me for a lack of commitment to the game, and he will. But he'll be retired, and have made more money in fewer years than any of us will. He can pay somebody to sit on his ears so he doesn't have to hear it.

If there's still mystery about it, then he gets the kid gloves.
