Flyers have almost $2 million in cap space before Gagne's injury.

The rumor is Gagne's is done for the year, meaning it clearing an additional $5 million off the books.

someone might take him at 1.4 to create a 1.4 deadweight on Philly's cap

i.e. a team like Pittsburgh, Washington, Boston.. any team that feels that they are in direct competition with Philly

Trade a meaningless prospect for future considerations.

You don't gain any cap space and Gagne's 5M stays on the books.

You get to replace the salary if he is on LTIR, which he is going to be.

Flyers are allowed to spend an additional $5 million dollars when Gagne goes LTIR. Please don't tell me the rules.

I fully understand the CBA thank you very much. The Flyers are allowed to spend an additional $5 million dollars, which still "clears" them that space since they can now use it.

Yes. Which is an entirely different thing than "coming off the books"

Because they would get a prospect for free.

As a matter of fact, this situation already happened on Sep 23

Flyers Pick Up Contract Space by Trading Prospect

The Flyers got a bit of contract relief Wednesday afternoon when they traded defensive prospect Patrik Hersley to Nashville for future considerations, CSNPhilly.com has learned.

This move reduces the Flyers' number of pro contracts from 49 to 48 – two below the NHL maximum of 50. General manager Paul Holmgren had said recently that he was hoping to gain some additional contract space in case he needed it this fall.

No matter how "you" want to word it, the Flyers now have an additional $5 million in cap space. Not matter how you added up the cap. Different site figure it out different ways.

Nashville isn't paying him, he is playing overseas. The Flyers have no other player like that. Nashville will never pay for 50 contracts. Completely different situation.

Preds only have 43 contracts including him.

-You place Jones on Re-entry in hopes that he gets claimed.

-If Jones gets claimed, its only costing a pro-rated $1.375 million in cap space without trading other players or picks, and your done to contract #48

-You sign a UFA or trade for a player to make it back to contract #49
Last year they paid off Fredrik Cabana's contract early in the season, and told him to take a hike. That was one way they opened a spot last year.

Agree. I cant think of any reason why he would be recalled right now. He will get claimed as for 1.3 mm he is a solid bottom pairing guy. 2.75 he is not. Unless they are trading away another dman makes little sense as jones doesn’t solve any of the problems they have right now. To waste 1.3mmin cap space for no reason is silly.

Which teams have injuries on the blueline?

Souray and Staios both have concussions, but I don't think Jones is the kind of defenseman the Oilers would be looking at.

Taking your word that they had 2M in space before Gagne's injury, they got 3M in cap allowance, not 5.

I bet a GM said they'd claim him but they won't and the Flyers will go over the salary cap.
