i think he's trying to say that you don't get to replace the full $5.25mil if gagne indeed does go on LTIR.

So - just because a player has a long-term injury does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. A team with a payroll of $44 million that has a player making $4 million get injured doesn't gain any extra cap space as a result; a team at $54 million and a player at $4 million only gains $1,300,000 (all pro-rated, of course). Relief toward the salary cap only comes if replacing an injured player's salary would push the team over the cap, and the amount of relief is limited to the amount the team would go over the cap - not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

Whether he is playing overseas has nothing to do with what I'm saying. It is not a completely different situation, it is a nearly identical situation. Only difference is Hersley is currently being loaned to Malmö. Nothing that you just said is relevant.

If the Flyers really needed to get down to 48 contracts, they could always trade some random player from their farm club to another team whose farm club needs some help.

But the Flyers are already over the cap if you include Rathje.

All Nashville did was took a contract. Preds aren't paying a penny for his contract. The Flyers have no other players that are playing overseas that count against the cap. That is why it is different. Hersley will just be let go after his deal is up, at zero cost to the Preds. Get what I am saying now? Any other deals would cost money.

Of course it would cost money. Why does that matter?

Again: If the Flyers wanted to get down to 48 contracts, they could trade one of those contracts for Futures. Much easier than burning $1.4M in cap space.

True but do we need Shanny for 500K? I think we need a d-men. Believe it or not adding Pronger was not enough.

Homer just said he wants Jones on the active roster.

You gotta think Jones won't get claimed. You don't make a move like this without knowing whats going on.

Flyers don't have a player that they'd like to lose for nothing, that someone else would want.

Yes, money matters in the this league today was attendence issues, and ooor NHL teams.

We don't need another Dman, we just need Coburn/Timonen to play better. And your going to need some that can pick up at least some of Gagne's production.

Before giving 500K to Shanny I would rather see Maroon for a few games. Who knows.. Maybe we can get lucky?

I agree about Timonen and Coburn.

I would like to see Maroon as well, but I've heard Shanny and the Flyers from many places in the past few weeks where theres smoke, there fire.

If Jones doesn't get claim, then you'll likely see a Phantoms since we are still at 49 contracts. They won't sign Shanny to make him #50.

I did too.. I seriously do not think it will be a good move (signing Shanny). There was a reason why he was not given top 9 job in New Jersey.

I think what everyone is trying to say that it's a very risky move.

I do not think he will get claimed but you never know.

Maybe Jones can pull Kukkonen and play a few games for the Flyers while Parent and Betts are getting better? I mean Syvret and TKO are all getting less then 10min of ice time.

We'll see.

This. This move is insane. Could this mean PETER FORSBERG?!?!?!?!

It is MUCH better to lose a minor league player for nothing than to burn $1.4 in cap space. You have to give to get.

Of course "money matters." You are still missing the point. I don't know how else to explain it to you.

If the Flyers absolutely needed to get down to 48 contracts, they can just trade one of those contracts for nothing. They have plenty of minor league players they could part with. Burning $1.4M in cap space, for the sole purpose of reducing the total number of contracts, like you suggested, doesn't make sense.

my guess is the flyers are hoping a conference rival picks him up. hopefully he pulls them down a bit for the flyers to climb a little in the standings.

If i'm a Division rival with some cap space I pick him up just so the Flyers have to pay half and hurts them on the cap

Devils?

The Islanders or Capitals should take note, IMO.

But I doubt he'll be claimed.
