I don't think Varada went for the legs, I think he underestimated how much Sundin would be leaning to the side. I think it's pretty clear that he let up, though, as he went flying after the contact - if he'd continued at full force he would have ploughed right through Sundin's legs (and probably caused a nasty injury)
I love the hit in your avatar. I'm guessing that is Torres throwing the hit. That IMO is a clean hit, but it defenitely hit the lower body of the player getting hit.
Varada wasn't going for the knees, and I don't even think he was going for the lower body. Was he going to destroy Sundin? Sure. But Domi went and ran Bondra a couple games ago, and he ran Hossa (hit his back rather than front) earlier in that game. So I don't see how Domi can complain. Varada wasn't going for a knee on knee, his body was pretty condensed, and he actually brought his knee back in to his body a bit at the last second.
Question, do any non Leafs fans think that Varada was going after Sundin's knee on that play? Or is this only the typical Leaf garbage?
He wasn't remotely going after Sundin's knee. If he wanted to, it would have been easy, since Sundin obligingly left his own knee out there when he pulled his upper body away. Instead, Varada kept his leg in tight when even natural instinct would have caused any player going for that hit to stretch it out in a split-second attempt to regain position on the elusive target.
Not that Varada is any angel or is above doing something dirty... he has ample track record of it. But there's absolutely no case on that play. *IF* he had managed to land his hit properly, *AND* he had brought and elbow up or something, it could have been really really ugly. But of course, nothing like that happened.
You could make as much case for Sundin going for the knee as Varada on this one. (Which is to say, zero case).
