Overview
Extra InformationAs expected, Mike Babcock split up Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk as the Red Wings prepare for life without Valtteri Filppula.

Filppula is out 6-8 weeks with a broken bone in his right wrist he suffered during Thursday’s 6-5 loss at Edmonton. Even with an increased need for skilled forwards who can contribute offensively, Babcock has decided to send a message to Ville Leino and scratch him for tomorrow’s game against Calgary. “Ville is having a day to watch,” Babcock said. “He hasn’t played hard enough here so he’s going to watch and the other guys are going to play.”

“We’re a work in progress with our lineup with the changes we’ve had,” Babcock said. “We’ll just see what works. I thought Eaves has done a good job, he’s going to get a chance, it looks like, on that second power play unit. I was very impressed with the way Helm played last night. He’s got to now become a force for us like he was in the playoffs just because we’re thinner down the middle.”

Leino has two goals and three points in 11 games. “I haven’t really been able to play my own game and do the things I want and I guess it’s time to do something,” Leino said. “I haven’t been playing my own game and I just want to get back to that. Maybe sometimes I play too simple, sometimes I try to do too much. I’m not scoring right now, so I just have to try to find my own game again.”

Chris Osgood will start in net against Calgary. Calgary D Staffan Kronwall, 26, slides into the lineup just in time to clash with his big brother, Detroit D Niklas Kronwall, 28. “At the end of the day, when the puck drops, I don’t see him too much out there,” Staffan said. “We’re both defencemen, right? But it will be definitely nice to see him.” The two planned to go for dinner Friday to make the most of a rare opportunity

Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson didn't skate. He wasn't feeling well and stayed at the hotel. The team isn't prepared to call it the flu yet. Coach Mike Babcock said there still is a chance Ericsson could be ready for tonight's game against the Flames.

If Ericsson can't play, Derek Meech will take his spot. If Ericsson can't play, they likely will shuffle their defense pairings. General manager Ken Holland said the team received good news, relatively speaking, on center Valtteri Filppula. He saw the doctor Friday for his broken right wrist and it was determined that he has a hairline fracture. There is no displacement. He won't need surgery. The wrist will be placed in a cast. The original time frame was 6-to-8 weeks, now Holland said it's looking closer to six weeks.

Pavel Datsyuk:
Pavel Datsyuk is quick to joke about his shooting, quicker than he is about actually shooting. Over the past two games, though, he’s shown how much more dangerous he is when he does just that.

Datsyuk had the Oilers running ragged trying to contain him Thursday at Rexall Place as he fired shot after shot as well as setting up two teammates in regulation as the Wings rallied from a four-goal deficit before losing in shootout, 6-5.

Though Datsyuk wasn’t able to convert when he went second for Detroit in the shootout, his shot is too good, those around him say, to not be used more.

"He's got a sneaky, sneaky shot," Dan Cleary said. "Anytime he gets a chance to shoot, we always want him to shoot because he's got a great snap wrister. He's really been practicing his slap shot, but I'm partial to his wrister."

Datsyuk has only reached four shots in three games, and Mike Babcock joked that was only because Datsyuk couldn't find anyone open for a pass those times. That has been a running jab since Datsyuk entered the NHL in 2001 after learning the game in his native Russia, where centers are taught to pass, pass, pass.

"I don't shoot much before I come here and it takes me three, four seasons to recognize how it's good if I shoot, how it's dangerous," Datsyuk said. "So now I just try to always remember: Shoot more, be dangerous. I had to change my style. I still do more passing, but now my head always tells me, shoot. ... Maybe I get a tattoo."

From averaging a shot a game as a rookie, Datsyuk topped three a game in each of the previous two seasons, leading to two straight 30-plus goal seasons.

"With Pav shooting more, he just makes himself that much more dangerous," Kris Draper said. "It's no secret we've been struggling to score goals, and when that's the case, everyone has to make that concentrated effort to shoot more. We need Pav scoring goals, and when he does that, it just makes our team that much more difficult to play against."

Since coming back from an undisclosed injury last week, Datsyuk has been on a line with Henrik Zetterberg, arguably the team's most accurate shooter up front.

As much as Datsyuk is retraining himself, he still joked that given the choice between having an open lane or passing to Zetterberg, "I pass to Z. Maybe if he pass back to me, then I shoot. Maybe not."

Nice GDT Topgunn, well tonight should be an interesting one, lets see how we respond to the Filp injury, hopefully we come out flying. Also Babs benching Leino.... will see if maybe Eaves can step up and show us the Vancouver game wasn't a fluke and he can play like that every night. And Ozzie better be on top of his game before I and every other Wings fan lose all the hope we have left in him. 5-2 Wings.

Lol 5-2 Wings?

I'm really worried about tonight, Calgary could really kick the **** out of the Wings. Luckily Datsyuk and Zetterberg always seem to have game when playing the Wings, so lets hope they come out big, otherwise, it'll be 6-4 Calgary.

Why not, dont u have any faith in are Wings? Yea Calgary could kick the crap out of us but I'm gonna say Ozzie has a real solid game, are offense continues are onslaught of out shooting are opponets by double digits and Dats and Z both have multi point games leading the way to a 5-2 Red Wings victory..... I dont get the snide lol u know were not the Thrashers were still capable of beating good teams.

Homer on the right side of Datsyuk? There's another thread about Leino being benched. These were the lines from Friday's practice:

Bertuzzi-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Cleary-Zetterberg-Williams
Draper-Helm-Eaves
May-Abdelkader-Maltby

http://www.freep.com/article/2009103...sit-next-game-

Kinda funny that the Wings have goalie problems...Kipper has a GAA over 3.00. The big difference is the Flames up near 4 goals scored a game. This was a team for years that struggled to get goal scoring from anyone not named Iginla. Surprised they've scored as well as they have considering they lost Cammalleri and didn't really replace his output...much like the Wings didn't find a one-for-one replacement for Hossa.

The Flames' success has been from their ability to get some balanced scoring from guys like Bourque, Glencross and Dawes and Phaneuf is off to a strong start as well. The Wings need to get similar production from their secondary guys and it gets harder without Franzen and Flip out of the lineup. They need Homer, Bert, Cleary and Williams to chip in more and it's a bonus to see guys like Maltby, Eaves and Helm score the odd goal. Hank and Pavel can't do this all themselves.

I wouldn't watch this one with the lights off...
It could be a scary night...
There will much blood spilled...

How about the real Red Wings take off their costumes as this mediocre team we've been watching for a month and show up and close out this road trip with a (regulation) win?

Ozzy's been pretty hot out of the gate this season. I think he's going to keep it going. 3-0 Wings.

Now I think Ozzie's gonna have a good game tonight, but I wouldn'tactly say he's been hot out the gate, that was a lame attempt at sarcasim right?

If only Detroit's top-six could look as good on ice as they do on paper:

Holmstrom-Datsyk-Bertuzzi
Cleary-Zetterberg-Williams

True, but the Wings supercede anything for me. I'm done with football thats for sure especially after watching Michigan get spanked by the worst team in the Big Ten... actually I might not mind watching Philly hopefully beat up on the Yanks, I think I might hate them more than the Pens.

Osgood makes two consecutive saves. The end is near.

[EDIT] Oh great PP for the Flames, first goal coming up.

I can't believe we still have Lebda on our roster, let alone playing regular games. Why not just call up Kindl and go with the future...

stuart and kronwall both moved out of position to make hits, so zetterberg had to cover langkow's rush for them in the defensive zone.

Lebda man, I'm talking about replacing Brett Lebda. If you think replacing Kindl for Lebda ruins our playoff chances then good on you and your imagination.

Kindl can't even play D on AHL. you think Lebda gives away a lot?
Kindl's every pass would be intercepted in NHL
