They have a poll on NHL.com where you can cast your vote as far as who you think is the greatest American born hockey player. Choices:
As of now Chelios is in the lead out of the 3 and "other" has the highest amount of votes thus far.
To me, Chelios was feistier and real nasty defense man who was a great "stay at home guy (he brought some offense though)." He may have hit harder than Leetch and was scarier to play against, but he never won a Conn Smythe like Leetch, nor could he skate, shoot or handle the puck like Leetch. How many American born defense men have accumilated 100pts or more in a single season? Zip!
Any way, this website sums up the top ten and what they have achieved so I don't need to get into it and plus you guys know just how good Leetch was more than anyone.
The one thing it doesn't mention is just how good Leetch was defensively as well. He wasn't the most intimidating, but Leetch was out there on all special teams and was not afraid to go into corners and battle it out with anyone. He got his nose dirty alot more than i think people give him credit for. If not for Sather, he would have gotten is 1,000 pts as a Ranger and possibly right at home in the Garden.
So don't let those ignorant fans (or the haters) embarrass Leetch on this poll. Go put in your vote for one of, if not the greatest Ranger of all time.
