This is a huge blow. Is it finally time to make a trade?

just great.
He's been the best forward (if not the best player) this season.

I doubt that there will be a trade so

that means increase ice time for Bert, Cleary, Williams

D and Z will most likely split.
giving us D, Z, Helm, Drpaer/Abderkader down the middle

I'm guessing it will be

Homer - D - Bert
Cleary - Z - Williams
Leino - Helm - Draper
May/Maltby - Abderkader - Eaves

Nope.

I'd rather stick it out. If we play well, great. If we bomb, we could be looking at a top 10 pick.

The Wings need to make a trade for a legit top-6 player now.

With Franzen out for essentially the season and Flip potentially out for half of it, they now have ~5 million in cap space.

With the Wings roster they would be looking at, likely, a late-teens to mid 20s pick. That's ******.

Give icetime to Leino even you may say he doesn't deserve it (debatable imo). the kid is useless as a third/fourthliner.

No reason to give up assets in a trade for a team that's not going to be a top contender this year regardless.

They're struggling for a several reasons, but next year is the year they'll get the cap room to do something about it. You don't rebuild Rome overnight...

damn....

he was playing so well too. best F on the team for the 1st few games.

he'll probably be healthy for the olympics, though.

maybe KH can trade for frolov. probably not, since frolov has scored 7p in 4 games since being benched.

This is a huge blow no doubt, and other than today I really was liking Flip's overall play being the 2nd line centre, but now we have no choice but to separate Datsyuk and Zetterberg

Dats and Bert did seem to be generating some chemistry though, so maybe we can keep the lines as is

Homer - Datz - Bert (Maybe throw in Leino on this line here and there, I don't know if he deserves it but maybe he just needs someone with elite skill to help get him going)

Cleary - Zetter - Williams (I have been decently happy with Williams this season so he deserves to stay on this line)

Eaves - Helm - Draper

Maltby - Abdelkader - May/Leino

If we can just get decent goaltending I think this team can still do decent this year despite all this struggles, and having to overcome all these struggles early should make us ready for war during the playoffs. By game 20 if we the goalies are still playing as they do we need to address the goalie situation first. At least now we can call up Larsson and give him a look as well

I don't think a trade is needed. We still have plenty of scoring depth and were carrying a full compliment of forwards anyway. What this will do is give more ice time to guys like Eaves, Gator, Helm and Leino and we'll see what they've got.

These are my calculations:

If Filppula stays on LTIR for 6 weeks, then we gain 495k in cap space, assuming our replacements make no more than 850k (Abdelkader's salary). If its 8 weeks, then we gain 615k. If hes out 10 weeks, then we gain 820k in cap sapce.

If Franzen stays on LTIR for 4 months, and our replacement again is no more expensive than our most exepensive "extra" with Abdelkader, we gain 1.9M in cap space. If hes out 5 months, we gain 2.48M in cap space. In hes out 6 months, we gain about 2.9M in cap space.

So, if we look at the optimistic side of Filppula's and Franzen's prognoses, we can add about 2.4M worth on raw salary (already pro-rated), which means a player who had a standard 184 day salary of about 7M at the deadline.

I'm not too concerned about the offense with Flip going down. For all the things that he was doing well, producing wasn't one of them. Defensively, his absence will be a blow, however.

Hopefully what this does is make Holland feel more secure about our salary cap issues, and facilitate a trade for a bottom-pairing stay-at-home defenseman.

The only guy I want to see the Wings sign is Kovy right at the deadline. Nothing before that. Scratch that, a stay at home 6th defenseman would help. (Lilja i never thought I'd say this but, I MISS YOU)

We would still have to give up something of significance at the deadline, it might be worthwhile to just have Datsyuk be his linemake in the olympics and convince him to come as a UFA in the offseason I can only wish LOL

The 7M sounds nice but i don't want Holland to trade for that high caliber player.
(It would cost us way too much.)

I just want a 3rd line defensive D
a 1b) goalie
possibly a top 9 forward

without give up too much prospect and picks (we need those more than ever)

If Frolov goes through another cold stretch and the coach gets ticked again it might be a possibility, Frolov's cap hit is 2.9 million so he is afforable, and he is a decently skilled winger with a right hand shot and good size, but we would still have to give LA something of decent significance to obtain him I'd think.

This team doesn't need a $7M player, but they probably could use 7M worth of exactly the players you mentioned. But I doubt Holland uses all that space, simply because adding guys like that will require something in return, and the Wings have limited assets to offer.

Theres a good chance Frolov is traded at the deadline anyway. Hes a UFA next year, and he'll command at least 4M on the market, and probably closer to 5M on a moderate-length deal. The Kings will probably look to use Frolov's would-be salary to sign a 2nd line center during the off-season, which they need more than a winger that they currently use on the 3rd line.

Man, I'm not sure what to say. I'm not a swearing person, probably a good thing.

If this gives Eaves an expanded role and gives Ritola a chance to be a call-up then there's one good thing to take from this awful news. Playing career best hockey and he breaks his wrist, unbelievable.
