Miscellaneous 2009-10 Canes News and Notes Thread

For things that perhaps don't justify a thread of their own.

For instance: http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=504149

Quote:
Hurricanes goaltender Michael Leighton usually puts in some serious ice time at the end of every practice. But yesterday, he left practice in a hurry. His excuse was a good one. This morning at 4:19 a.m., Michael's wife, Jennifer, gave birth to the couple's second daughter. Annalise Mae Leighton weighed in at six pounds, four ounces, and joins older sister Ella (3) in the Leighton household.

And he was a goalie

In other news, I saw Joni Pitkanen last night, and decided not to harass him about how sucky the team has been playing, since he may have gotten sad and missed a few games, though from what I heard about this play against the Blues, that may not be a bad thing.

So I just finished reading Bob McKenzie's "Hockey Dad" book. There's a Hurricanes related story in it, and I'm not sure if it's one of those stories everyone already knows, but anyways:

Quote:
The week before the NHL entry draft, my player-agent friend Rick Curran told me an NHL team was thinking of drafting Mike in one of the late rounds. I assumed, correctly, it was the Carolina Hurricanes because I know GM Jim Rutherford pretty well. I talked to him a few days before the draft and told him if he was thinking of drafting Mike to please not do it. I told him people would say Mike only got drafted because Jim and I were friends; that he wouldn't be doing Mike or me any favors; that Mike was far better off going into his first year of college under the radar. Jim confirmed his scouts were thinking of drafting Mike; said that Mike deserved to be a consideration based on how well he played at St. Mike's and knowing he would have another four years of development time at college.
Jim said he would think about my request not to take Mike, but he challenged me to name a prospect who I thought would be a better pick than Mike in the sixth or seventh round.
I told him Nick Dodge, an '86 from Oakville, Ont., who had just completed his sophomore year at Clarkson, was a better player and prospect at that point than Mike.

That is unbelievable actually. Thanks ratsgirl for that. We've been giving JR credit for that pick this entire time when ultimately he would have rather had Mike McKenzie. With all due respect to Mike, that's a much better hockey player in Dodge.

But very classy move by Bob to say that to JR, even at the expense of his son not being drafted. I like that he's trying to make his own way and not using his father's connections to find his way into hockey. I have no doubts we'll sign him after college.

More interesting is that Mike is still very much on our radar after being invited to the prospects camp. For what it's worth, he's off to a good season, consistent with his scoring in the last one, in the NCAA ranks again this year. Would not be surprised at all to see us sign him after the season, especially if we clear out some veterans and need to call up some of the kids to fill the roster spots.

since he's not a Canes prospect anymore:

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A former River Rats player was in custody Thursday after being arrested on sexual assault charges for an incident that allegedly occured in Bethlehem.

Robert Hughes, 21, a Canadian citizen, was arrested Wednesday by members of the U.S. Marshal Violent Crime Fugitive Task Force at the Arena at Harbor Yard following a hockey game. Hughes now plays for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

I got 19/26 .... which I thought I could do better than.

Spoil:

I missed Craig Adams, Sean Hill, Martin Frackin' Gelinas *UGH*, Gary Roberts, Robert Kron, Scott Walker, and Chad Larose

Quite a few personal facepalms for myself in there.

Quite a few facepalms for some of the names on that list.

Spoil:
I got 19 out of 26, missing Gelinas, Hill, Kron, Walker, Kaberle and both Adams. I actually blanked out on Kapanen for awhile too.

Craig Adams and Josef Vasicek should be nowhere near a top scorers list

26/26, so no one can call me a bandwagon fan even though I haven't watched a canes game in its entirety this season.

18/29 on this one. Got everything from 1993 forward. I'll take it.

Karmanos quotes get a big ....

Quote:
After the Canes lost the series opener to the Penguins, Karmanos said he told general manager Jim Rutherford that he thought the Hurricanes were the better team.

"The Boston team we beat was one heck of a good hockey team," he said. "New Jersey was really tough. So something happened. I don't know what it was, but it seems to have continued on through this season."

Karmanos noted he has never been around a team, at any hockey level, to go through a 12-game winless streak.

"I think once it breaks, we'll see the team that went to the conference finals and the final four last season," he said. "We just need to hang on tight, because we're just as capable of winning 12 in a row, or more capable of winning 12 in a row, as losing 12 in a row ... excuse me, a 12-game winless streak."

Could it be the Canes are a bit too old? Has age, and a lack of quickness, crept into their game?

"Absolutely not," Karmanos quickly replied. "Our key players are young.
This is how he let Compuware fade from a potential market leader to a market laggard - overstate your own and undervalue the competition by standing pat.

I don't know that the first quote gets a big . Remember, the Canes were a Staal whiff away from sending that into OT on the road.
