But then, you could argue that he's a 4th liner who can chip in clutch scoring, so maybe that's enough.

Svoboda - I'm not sure what makes him so special either. But then, from looking at old drafts, he always seems to get picked, so maybe others know something I don't.

Joseph - One of the best backups in this thing IMO. Very good in the regular season. Questionable in the playoffs, but who cares when Brodeur is the starter? I'm just not sure I would take a backup this soon when your starter will play 70 games a year.
Sorry for not replying to this right away, I missed this post in the shuffle.

Regarding Simpson, I think I've just adequately solved that issue with Andreychuk. Svoboda, meh, again he's my 6th guy, I know there's some questions around him. As for taking Joseph, I think having a good backup makes a difference. In a close goalie matchup between say Brodeur and Dryden, if my backup is that much better than my opponents, I'd give the slight advantage to the party with the better backup. If I'm investing that much into goaltending anyways, why not spare a fourth liner that I could probably get next round anyways, and take a strong backup to solidfy that investment.

Thanks for the comments though Dev.

if that gets veto'd, I quit this now and forever

Vetos are for like trading Bossy for Kerr. Not this.

Game 5 against Anaheim in 1997 should have gone down as the finest goaltending performance in franchise history. With his team's season on the line, Luongo put on a clinic. Stopped nearly 60 shots. That game should have been out-of-reach after the first period, but Luongo made several stellar saves. The Canucks were a "Jan Bulis crossbar early in the second overtime" from winning a game they should have lost 6-1 or 7-1. But our last memories are often our best, and our last memory of Luongo in that game was surrendering a terrible goal in double overtime.

Luongo was great in 2008 until after the all-star break. He was distracted. His wife gave birth to their first child back in Miami, and I believe it was a difficult pregnancy. His mind was far from the game.

He struggled at times against Chicago in last year's playoffs. Granted, his team pulled an el foldo in the waning moments of Game 4, and then in Games 5 and 6. With the team's season on the line in Game 6, Luongo had his worst game of the season, but the Canucks as a whole had their worst defensive game of the year in Game 6.
He's considered a bad-team goaltender by ATD standards because of his prior track record, much of which comes from his time in Florida, and the fact that he's only made the playoffs half the time in Vancouver. By the time his career is over, no, I don't suspect he'll be considered a bad team goaltender by these standards, but right now it's hard not to consider him as such.

Not veto-worthy no. Obviously if it is broken down to "Andreychuk for a 6XXth pick", then the team getting Andreychuk is getting the better asset.

I see that the Bettmans are on the clock. It seems like time only flies when you don't think it's going to.
Drat.

We'll select Corb Denneny, and bio it up later.

Fully expecting Ashbee to miss a significant amount of time due to injury, the Clippers select D Brian Engblom.

Corb is one of those non-HHOFers who I am pretty sure was better than Barney Stanley (and I reiterate again, I don't think Stanley was a bad pick, just that Corb is an even better pick right now) - I don't think he is THAT far off from Odie Cleghorn.

Well, except for Ron Hextall and Frank McCool. (Sorry Mad, but Hextall as the second back-up picked just doesn't do it for me. Frankly, I think Hextall will be near the bottom of the ATD back-ups).

But beyond that, you're right. The back-up that have been selected have been mostly strong picks. Rollins is the latest.

Yeah, you're right. Not Hextall and McCool. I forgot about them. Hextall was on my list, but right at the bottom. McCool wasn't near my list.

The Victoria Cougars are very pleased to select F Tomas Holmstrom

That rounds out my 12 forwards

The Medicine Hat Tigers will round out their fourth line, and their group of 12 forwards, with a big, strong winger who skates well, has a nose for the net and has a penchant for big goals. Welcome to the ATD, LW Steve Payne.

And there'll be lots of guys making the jump. With 32 teams, that means an extra 96 players. nik's pick at the end of this round will be pick 672 - which would be the final pick in a 28-team draft. Guys like Carr, March and Payne were borderline guys for me in a 28-team draft. Others like Getzlaf and Richards, with what they bring to the table, should be on a fourth line in a 32-team draft, if that's what you're looking for in centres for that role. And there'll be some guys who, on paper, should be good enough to slide into this ATD from the last MLD, but maybe they don't bring enough intangibles to be on a fourth line or to be a 13th forward.

Two quick things, fellas:

1) I'll be out of town tomorrow night covering hockey, so I'll need pit to update the main draft thread for me. (Thanks in advance, brother).

2) Should we be concerned about Cup's team? He has missed two picks, and he hasn't been around since Thursday. Three straight missed picks is usually when a GM is up for replacement. It's been the unwritten rule since I've been part of this.

Missing 19th and 20th rounds is no big deal. His team has the first 18 picks. I say cut him a little slack and go to round 22 before seeking a replacement. There really aren't many must-picks at this stage of the game. The difference between round 19 and round 22 is nowhere like the gap in early rounds. My 2 cents.

Not sure; but it seems rather hasty to get a replacement so late in the game.

Can anyone take a one-name list?
