According to a recent tweet from Jim Cerny of the Rangers Official Website, the Rangers have named forward Vinny Prospal the second Alternate Captain next to Ryan Callahan.
Prospal brings a limitless amount of effort and energy to this team, as well as his own personal intensity that the Rangers have not had in quite some time. In my eyes, I felt Vinny was the best choice all the way, and I am very pleased with the Rangers decision to allow their top playmaker to wear the "A". I would assume that we will see Prospal with the letter on his chest for the first time tonight in Vancouver.
He's earned it. A skilled hard worker who shows emotions. He leads both by example and by personality, who likes to fire up his teammates. He and Torts also know eachother very well, so he's the most natural choice by far.
He could arguably even be the captain instead of Captain Ca$h - because he's frankly better than Drury in every single aspect - if it wasn't that he's so new to the team.
Yeah I figured thats why I asked....based on what exactly?
Based on youth, inexperience... I still don't think they've found that guy to replace what Jagr and Shanny brought to the team a few years ago.
This Renney quote from last year summed it up for me:
"But we had a struggle all year with internal leadership, and I have to think it was very difficult for guys, especially the younger guys, to look over the locker that used to belong to No. 68 (Jagr) and see someone else there, and the same about the locker that used to belong to No. 14 (Shanahan)."
Granted, this team is much different from last year's so I'm hoping that the same leadership issues don't arise. Cally, Dubi, Staal, etc, are all a year older so maybe that helps. We'll see what happens through the course of the year.
