Anyway, just wanted to pass on that Mark Mancari never got on the Sabres' plane Thursday night for Ottawa and has been sent back to Portland.

The move means Thomas Vanek is expected to play Saturday against the Senators. The Sabres are scheduled to practice at 1 this afternoon.

It's funny -- I was totally done with Mancari at the beginning of the year, but he's really come around. He had a few good physical shifts last night and he doesn't give up on the puck. I'm cautiously optimistic that he might be actually be a real NHL-er. Nonetheless, checking himself into the boards last night was a bit hard to watch.

I feel the same way.

I could see Mancari fitting the #12/#13 forward role. He seems like a decent depth player... you can give him 7 minutes on the 4th line and a shift or two on the PP... You can sit him and reinsert him on a need basis. But the value is really in the fact that he can take a shift on your 2nd line and provide some offense like he did with Roy-Vanek in a 2 game stint a few weeks ago.

I dont expect much... but for a cheap league minimum contract, i'd take him for another year

Thomas Vanek is definitely in the lineup after missing six games with a groin injury, and Craig Rivet is expected back after skipping two games with the flu. Patrick Kaleta, who had surgery on his hand late last month, is also an option.
Quote:
Kaleta skated as a fourth forward on the line of Raffi Torres-Matt Ellis-Adam Mair. He did well in shooting and stickhandling drills despite a cast on his right hand.

"He’s actually doing pretty good," Ruff said. "It’s probably a situation that you could think about playing him. It’s something we’ve discussed and I think we’ll discuss more today."

Not really. Mancari actually has offensive talent. Or, at least he's shown he can score lots of goals at the AHL level.

Bad news.

FWIW, It looks like Hecht may be out for the post-season as his hand issue is worse than originally anticipated. I apologize for the Eklund-ness of such a claim (and to the mods), but this particular source is extremely solid and would not spread any garbage. Here's hoping that Jochen gets healthy.

So what would we potentially be looking at?

Ennis-Connolly-Pominville

Kennedy-Roy-Vanek

Torres-Gaustad-Grier

Ellis-Mair-Kaleta

Good news on the Connolly front!!!

Quote:
There's good news on the injury front for the Buffalo Sabres heading into Thursday's opener of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Coach Lindy Ruff said today that he's "optimistic" that center Tim Connolly will be ready for Game One against the Boston Bruins after the center skated on his own over the weekend for the first time since he was injured late last month. And Ruff is not ruling out Jochen Hecht or Drew Stafford either.
http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/

Connolly skating is fantastic news, because now it's just a matter of getting some good practices in and he should be OK to go. And I'm fully convinced he'll take about 14 pain shots if he needs to in order to get on the ice.

That would be amazing. Then even if Hecht can't go, Connolly can center Ennis and Pominville to keep that kind of four person group that works well, together.

From WGR:

Quote:
The Coach has a number of injured players but has a good feeling about Tim Connolly and Drew Stafford. Connolly missed the end of the season with foot injury. The forward has been practicing.
"Tim has been skating over the weekend. We're optimistic about him practicing and possibly playing on Thursday."

The report on forward Jochen Hecht was less clear.
"Jochen Hecht hasn't skated yet. But we're not ruling him out."

Drew Stafford was checked hard by Andy Sutton during Saturday's win in Ottawa and left the contest. Stafford missed the finale in New Jersey, but could be coming back according to Ruff.
"He's a question mark too. We're optimistic that he may be ready too."

Hecht not skating is definitely not good news.

Its also a tad confusing since he has an injured finger.
