Mez is what he is. A top 4 defenceman and that's it. He is vastly overpaid and his development clearly has stalled and possibly regressed...

Anyone know if he is still taking dumb penalties and blasting pucks into the opposing teams shinpads still?

I don't understand. I thought the guy was just a good dman with too many brain farts but then we kept getting told that all his stats pointed to him being an elite dman one day. I'm shocked!

Mez is still young, if he was used as a second pairing Dman he'd still be developing and doing well. However as a top pairing D he just isn't good enough to be put out against opponents top lines and that is killing his development IMO. If used right, he'd be valuable 2nd or 3rd pairing Dman on any team, but never at that price.

They're probably getting sick of him shooting from the point every time he gets the puck only to miss by 2 meters every single time.

It's too bad, he is very talented, but not all there. I've heard so many stories about this guy's escapades on his free time.

Mez got what he asked for. He wanted to be paid more than what he's worth, thinking that he's better than he is, and now he can't live up to the expectations.

Exactly. I predict him to be playing in the KHL when this contract expires.

That's exactly what i like about Murray. He doesn't make the "popular moves"

- Meszaros wants 4M$ (as a RFA nonetheless)? No way, let's trade him for Kuba, Picard and a 1st (Campoli) = gives us defensive depht and puck-movement that we were lacking big time back then (Richardson, Nycholat, Schubert vs Carkner, Campoli, Picard)

- Vermette is a fan favorite? Yes but that's the guy Columbus want and the Sens lacked a N.1 goalie for a while = get Leclaire and draft Lehner with the 2nd round pick.

- Neil is not needed anymore? Wrong, Murray signs him, forced to overpay but understands how soft our team would be without him (and Fisher, Carkner,...).

- Matt Carkner? Too slow for the NHL? AHL d-man at best? Try him, give him an opportunity = signs him which helps our semi-soft defense a lot

- Fisher should have been let go instead of paying him 4.2? Like i said before, i cannot imagine how bad our team would be without guys like Fisher, Neil and Kelly surrounding Alfie, Spezza, Phillips and Volchenkov. The Cody Basses, Aaron Ashames and Stephane Yelles of the world wouldn't cut it and would be already -35 on the season.

I guess that's what 30 years in the NHL gives you versus a couple years in front of a computer for WAGs (Web Armchair GMs)...

About 50 games in to Meszaros' rookie season I predicted to a friend of mine that Mesz would be the best d-man to ever play for the Sens.

Obviously I was incredibly wrong. He clearly isn't committed to being as good as he can be. And a fat contract isn't going to help that.

But the tools are there; or at least we saw flashes of some outstanding tools in those first 50 or 60 games.

I wouldn't advise anybody to do that right now.

Exactly, Mez believed his own hype a little too much and thankfully the Sens aren't the ones paying for it.

As soon as I heard his name left out of the Belly song, I knew he was never going to make it in Ottawa.
