Jon Bernier
2 of Hickey/Schenn/1st rounder
Frolov (simply for cap reasons)

for

Staal
+ 3rd liner of some sort, gritty lombardi type

That's quite a bit of very promising youth. Bernier is pretty much ready, the only reason he isn't up is DL likes his goalies to pay their dues. Frolov is a really nice player, and Carolina could either resign him or take that money and put it into something else next year. Schenn and Hickey pushed hard in camp this year. A 1st rounder would probably be in the low to mid 20s.

I'm totally comfortable with going with Quick in net with Zatkoff as a 3rd, although many fans don't feel the same way. I'd give quite a bit for a Kopitar/Staal 1-2 down the middle. DL loves his youth, but I think he would consider this. Not sure what Carolina would think about it, but I figure getting a top prospect at goalie, defense, and center would make losing Staal a bit more palatable.
IMO, there is no way Rutherford even listens to this proposal. You are offering up a goalie prospect (which Carolina doesn't need at all), a couple of unproven players (who more than likely won't even be close to the player Staal is) and dumping Frolov (who has numerous issues).

The Canes won't go into a full blown rebuild as it isn't their managements style. They will build around Staal and Ward, bring up some youth (Boychuk, Sutter, etc..) and add some other players via trade and FA.

Staal is a franchise player, a proven playoff performer and the face of the franchise.

To Carolina: Jaroslav Halak, Mathieu Carle
To Montreal: Tuomo Ruutu

I'm a big fan of Halak and I'll be sad to see him go, but this might be the opportunity to get something valuable for him right here, if Gainey really has the intention to move forward with Price.

Ward will be coming back, and Carolina won't be targeting a goalie they project as a starter. They'll look for someone who will slide into the backup role once Ward returns in a month.

The obvious choice right now is probably Biron, who was signed to be traded and return young assets to the NYI in the first place.

The big question would be do you build around Staal or trade him for a lot of assets? By the time the rebuild would be nearing completion he would be of UFA age.

It's just so awesome how a GM, searching for a goaltender who can
get the starting job done for about a month, ends up trading away his franchise center.
hfboards rock!

Carolina to sign Manny Legace

as per Darren Dreger twitter twitter.com/darrendreger

Legace should become property of the Carolina Hurricanes as early as today.
So much for thinking they would take Toskala

Speedy recovery to Cam Ward, your team needs you.

Wrong section. But yeah, it will be nice to put the Toskala talk behind us. I hope Manny is well rested, because he's gonna get worked.

We're last in the league. Ward was the only player we had who was playing halfway well. We won't be playing in any big games.

Based on Leighton's stats, I think they'll be ok with it.

C'mon, everyone knows the Wings fans have to have someone to rip on for the seasons they didn't win the Cup.

The Canes are last in the league, are without Staal and Ward for probably 4 weeks (maybe more), are playing terribly and need to win 2/3rds of their remaining games in order to even sniff the playoffs..and you are worried about him as a "big" game goalie?

Have you watched Legace play in the playoffs? Here are is his playoff numbers with the DRW:

11 games 4 win 6 loses 0 shutouts 2.54 gaa .888 save pct. Not very good.

I think at this point, the Canes have decided not to waste any assets to fill Ward's spot.

From what I have heard, Legace isn't even the clear #1 for the Thrashers AHL affiliate in Chicago. That being said, he was viewed as the Thrashers main fallback if Hedberg or Pavelec go down so while he was not in the Thrashers org. it somewhat hurts their depth at G.

Have you looked at the Hurricanes record in the 09-10 regular season? I don't think they are worried and I really don't think they have signed him with him being their big game goalie in mind. Give it a rest, we know all about Legace's past.

, Oilers fans still smile about that to this day, it's one of the few things we can.
