Karjala Cup

Why is there no discussion of this tournament on this board? It would seem that the 7-0 win over Sweden would merit some discussion. As well as the fact that just eight SM-Liiga players were in the Team Finland lineup (perhaps significantly - that eight included both goaltenders).

Any thoughts?

Really was thinking the same. We won 7:0 against our biggest rivals and nobody is speaking about it. For sure it was a meanless game but come on!

Here in US, all we've heard about that tournament is that Forsberg was playing for Sweden - not much information about how well or poorly he performed - and that teams like the Rangers were interested in his progress in hopes of possibly signing him.

But it's interesting that you feel the tournament is now meaningless. Is there's a reason it's lost some of its important in your eyes?

Well, it's because the best players of the country are missing because of playing in the NHL. And in the last years we won nearly every game against the Swedes in the EHT-tournaments. But at important tournaments like the Olympics or the World Championship we lose nearly all games against them.

It's mostly just a chance for some of the euro league players to prove their abilities in international competition and get some experience and possibly gain a spot in the Olympic or World Championship teams. It's not a very prestigious tournament in the sence that winning the tournament means very little (as is and always has been the case with all the EHT tournaments). Still, I wouldn't go as far as calling it meaningless.

Getting a chance to humiliate Sweden is always good.

Exactly. EHT games feature lineups that should beat just about any team outside the NHL. There have been quite a few cases where an SM-Liiga star has turned out to be virtually useless in the national team. You don't want to find that out when the important tournaments take place.
