Great list. Funny how many times Detroit appears as the team that was upset.

I wonder how many times it has to happen until it stops being an upset.

I was really impressed with list going beyond the NHL.

And to stay with the theme of the thread, here's some mood music.

Likely a function of how often they make the playoffs. Detroit has played an awful lot of playoff series over the past decade.

Like JJ said, how many times does it have to happen before people see that yes eventhough Detroit is a powerhouse they are also perennial chokers as well. The biggest reason is due to their goaltending, they have never had good goaltending just a great defence and offence. Even when they played Calgary in 04 I would have stopped calling it an upset.

Still get emotional watching any of the '06 Playoff run. Gut ties up, smile creeps across my face and my eye balls make like a dam holding back water.

I'm not sure you can call a team that wins 4 cups in 10 years chokers.

Hasek?

Yes you are right an aged Hasek has been there only good goalie. I was referrign more so to the years when they choked and had Cujo, Legace and Osgood (now I know he has the cups and all but those cups are more of a result of a high octane offence and defence).

Also why do you think Holland fought so hard for the NHL to restructure the draft order. That was him getting insurance for his team constantly choking.

I really don't see the oilers beating the wings in 06 as the huge upset some people do, during that season the oilers and wings were very evenly matched in the head to head games, the biggest thing holding the oilers overall record back that season was the lack of goaltending, but that was addressed before going into the playoffs. Sure #8 beating #1 looks like a huge upset but when you look closer at the matchup it really wasn't all that big of an upset, the oilers matched up well with that team all season.

That wasn't in the last decade.

I can't understand how anyone would label Detroit as chokers. Arguably the most successful franchise of at least the last decade, if not longer.

Besides, what would that make us?

Cup Finals last year and the Cup the year before? That's choking?

We've all purged Tommy Salo from our memories using drinking. Lots of drinking.

If they're chokers how is it an upset?

Being involved in an upset means you're the better team. This only strengthens Detroit's claims to being consistently great for a long time.

Despite their cup wins, they definitely did choke for a couple years, Calgary style.

Always felt Legace was scapegoated big time in the Oilers' series. The Red Wing defense were terrible at controlling any Oiler around their own net, Smyth could have had a bar-b-que going, handing out hot dogs, and they would have let him.

Scapegoating of Salo was BS. If you're team Sweden, you should be able to beat Belarus with a Junior C goalie in net. He also played a huge part in winning gold for them in '94, but nobody seems to remember that anymore.

Don't hate the palyer hate the game. The Yankees are the most successful franchise in the MLB and up until this year they were easily labelled as chokers.

I was referring to the Red Wings team before the previous two seasons. Consistently being at the top of the league every season and then failing to advance in the playoffs is choking.

Is someone gonna come out and say that San Jose are not chokers because they have been at the top of the standings consistently for the last 5 years or so?
