what's the best series of all time?

By no means do i have a knowledge of all the series' that have taken place, but maybe some people who study hockey a lot plus are older could try and answer this topic.

My best guess is that the best series of all time would be the 1994 stanley cup finals. I dont know what storyline it didnt have;

Two cities starving for their first cup in memory
A playoff warrior(messier) continueing to be best leader in sports
unbeleivable action, physical play
as good of goaltending as you might see
a 3 to 1 deficit comeback
a tense game 7

what do you hockey historians think?

probably isn't the best ever....

but Toronto - Isles from 02' was great...the hitting was raised like 9 notches, and the injuries to Jonnson and Peca just fueled the fire all the more.

Also any of the Wings- Avs series...especially 97' with all the fights...

and 2002 was pretty good too, when Roy gave up 7 goals and Det fans hackled us to death.

I'd take Nj/Rangers over Rangers/Vancouver in 94, I doubt either can really be considered the best series ever though.

imo, the best series ever is a tie between the 1987 Stanley Cup Finals and the 1991 Battle of Alberta. Both series went to Game 7 and was seriously some of the best hockey I've ever seen. I have Game 7 of the 1987 Finals on tape and watch it from time to time for fun.

I don't know if it was the best but the Canadiens-Nordiques series in 93 was pretty good. It had all the drama, the rivalry, hitting & scoring you could ask for. Throw in the fact that it went 7 games and you have a winner.

Yeah i am a Minnesotian but last years COl MN series was great. Roy's last run. We come back from 3-1. The no namers vs a perenial powerhouse.

Calgary/Vancouver 1994 did it for me. The last three straight games of the series going to OT... game 7; double OT... the save... a young Pavel Bure ending things on a breakaway. *sigh*

I don't know about series, but the final two games of the 2000 SCFs were really, really fun to watch. Triple-OT in the one, Double-OT in the other...

It didn't go 7 games. The Nords won the first 2 games, then the Habs went on to win 11 in a row.

but yeah, still an awesome series.

for me personally, Avs-Devs in 2001. sloppy series, but you never knew what was going to happen. it ended amazingly.

probably 1994 Flames-Nucks was the best though. so exciting.

as a Ranger fan - the '94 NYR/NJ series was awesome. It has to be at least considered one of the best ever. (am i biased at all here, myabe some, but c'mon...OTs, comebacks, Messier....geesh).

Some early round upsets over the years could be considered. Even last year, Minnesota vs Colorado, coming back from 3-1 to win it. Nice.

In '93, the Leafs vs Kings series was awesome.

Rangers vs Capitals in '86 and Rangers vs Flyers that year too.

Flyers vs Islanders in 87 maybe.

those are some the stick out. man, playoff hockey is the bestest.

I'll suggest a series that most people probably won't remember, because it was a sweep. But the 1992 Cup Final between the Hawks and the Pens was awesome.

Game 4 especially, probably the best game I've ever seen in my life. I have a tape of it at home. Belfour got pulled by Keenan in the first after letting in two soft goals, and Dominik Hasek took over. He let in 4 more goals that night, but it was an amazing performance. Kevin Stevens had a breakaway at the end of the 2nd, and as he took that pass at the blueline, Hasek darted out and forced the puck away. It was insane.

Dirk Graham scored a hattrick in that game too, and hundreds of hats were thrown down on the ice. The most I've ever seen, it took them a good 5 minutes to clean up.

probably the most competitive sweep i've seen. the first and fourth games were my favorite. jagr's goal in game 1 to tie it was simply awesome

I think the best playoff series in history has to be a Stanley Cup Final, just considering the stakes.

With that said, the 1987 Stanley Cup Final was probobly the best I've ever seen.

The best for me was Calgary/Vancouver and Vancouver/NYR in 94.

You expect me to choose one?

The 2000 Stanley Cup Finals was the most entertaining for me. Best goaltending I've ever seen, from both ends.

One series I would love to see replays of is Calgary-Edmonton from 1991. Who could forget Theo Fleury's goal celebration in OT of game 6?
