This is not how you rebound from a loss.

As much as no one may want it, he has to play a game at some point and this seems like as good as a time as any. Coming off a loss and having to face two tough teams in a back to back situation is pretty much the perfect time to start him actually.

Why does he have to play one eventually? Don't say because Gustavsson will get tired. He's what, 25-years-old? Lots of goalies play back to back. I just wish they'd let the Monster go for a while and worry about Toskala down the road.

Not much choice, really. Gustavsson won't be able to handle a Brodeurian workload.

66 games last season. SEL and Tre Kronor so not NHL calibre games but still competitive hockey.

But it can be a smart move not to burn Gus in his first season.

Good call by Wilson.

You really don't want him starting at home, because the fans will get on him immediately. Let him start the game on the road, for the back to back, maybe he turns it around.

It's not like this guy is a bum, he's actually played good goal in this league. I hope he plays well, because a usable TANDEM is good for the team.

And what's the travel like in Sweden though? It's not exactly a big country.

There is a bit of a chance Chicago blows our doors off, so he is protecting Jonas here...and also, with the back to back, you don't want Vesa at the ACC where he gets mercilessly booed...because that affects the other players too...

Also, if he looks bad, it can make decisive decisions on Toskala's future somewhat easier...

also, if he happens to win, it would boost Vesa's confidence to win in such a tough building/opponent...

Meh, did not have much hope for that game anyway. At least I will be able to watch Gustavsson on Saturday

Wow. Did you guys actually expect Gustavsson would play all of the remaining games of the season?

We all know how Toskala has played, but the truth is that if this team is going to be competitive, they're going to need two goalies. Gustavsson might have played a lot of games last year, but there's no point in absolutely grinding him down in his first season through a grueling schedule.

Toskala is only going to get more and more rusty the longer he's on the bench. Hopefully the defense has gained confidence the past few games. Toskala is due for one of his big games, and if the team could win a game in front of Toskala, they wouldn't play scared in front of him.

I'm not saying he really deserves this start, but considering it's the first of a back-to-back (and everything else), this move absolutely makes sense.

It's the one team in the league that he might actually be better than both of their goalies.
