S. Niedermayer (ANA) and Fabian Brunnstrom (DAL) on the block
Two surprising names have surfaced to fuel the possibility of NHL trades. Anaheim defenceman Scott Niedermayer is one, and sophomore Dallas forward Fabian Brunnstrom the other.
The Newark Star-Ledger quoted Niedermayer as saying, "I think it's a possibility," when asked about being traded by Anaheim this season. Niedermayer doesn't have a no-trade clause, but in follow-up, Niedermayer says his family loves Anaheim and he isn't interested in leaving.
Can't imagine the market for Brunnstrom would be overwhelming... but Niedermayer?
The Nieds thing makes little sense -- Anaheim is giving up? No way. He is probably expecting to be traded if they are out of the playoff race. That is all.
What happened to the next Alfredsson? Is it me or the guys who come out of nowhere and get waaay over hyped never live up to the hype or come even close.

Scotty gave a standard answer and this gets overblown. However, it doesn't mean I am not intrigued by what the Ducks can get. If Anaheim trades Niedermayer, they would want a Pronger type deal in return. From Washington, I would expect no less than Azner, Carlson, and 1st pick 2010.

Niedermayer's already retired once, how is he going to get the same return as a top level D still with multiple years still to go?

If it comes to trading Nieds, we won't get that much. Pronger had a year left in his deal. I would look at the Forsberg and Hossa deals as benchmarks.
A young roster player + good, not great prospect + 1st.
“Scott’s going nowhere,” he said. “He was in New Jersey and some writer decided to make some trouble in Anaheim. Scotty is going to retire as an Anaheim Duck, whenever that might be. As far as I’m concerned, Scotty can play for the Ducks as long as he wants.
“It’s the same thing I said last year. He wants to retire here and he’s going to retire here.”
