11/13/09 - Leafs @ Chicago - 3-2 LOSS

Ladies and gentlemen, at this moment in time the Kessel Vessel is currently at maximum capacity.

The good:

-Kessel's two goals... beauties. Definitely pulling his weight!
-Toskala surprisingly solid game, beauty save on Versteeg late in the third

The bad:

-Someone obviously dumped cement in Stajan's skates--although he did get 2 assists.
-Johnny Malkin at it again!
-Horrible turnover by Schenn in the first, Kane capitalizing.

The ugly:

-The inconclusive GOAL in the 1st. We could have definitely used another 5 minutes + the extra point. Thanks officials!

So many things could have gone right in this game. Solid effort by Leafs, always coming up short though.

Its like the forwards have decided that Phil is going to score all our goals and they're free to dangle into a turn over.

Anyone notice our best dangler Grabovski seems to be the only guy that got the memo?

Kessel looked great,,,,, Guy has a brief career so far but he kills the Hawks!

Schenn didn't look that good out there. Have the Leafs thought of sending him down at all? Might be best for the kids confidence or at least bench him (Byfuglien was benched last year and Kane was sat for 2nd and 3rd period of a game last year to get a message thru to them)

Haha.. i was just looking at the box score and saw that Stajan got 2 assists... I hope that doesn't cloud Wilson's judgement although i'm pretty sure it will

Time for a major shake-up, Blake, Hagman, Stempnuik, Stagan, Ponikarovsky should all be traded if possible. Would take 2nd or 3rd round picks for any and all of them. Call up some young Marlies and trade Kaberle at the trade deadline.

The hitters aren't hitting.
The fighters aren't fighting.
The checkers aren't checking.
The scorers aren't scoring.

Wilson should be canned as well !!!

Stajan must've done something to move from the fourth line to the first line after icing the puck and giving up the goal. I don't know what it is, Maybe some sort of mind trick.

Kessel saved this team from embarrassment. Can't blame Toskala for the loss.

Put this one on the D.

Time to let Hagman wear a suit for a couple games.

Kessel seemed to get going once Wilson replaced Mitchell with Stajan. What's with all the hate?

I had some slight concerns before Kessel played that his shoulder injury might hinder his shot a bit, but that's been laid to rest.

kessel has goal scorer instincts and the only other players that have shown me to have his offensive touch is Kulemin

poni will score cause of his size and kaberle will set up plays with his superb skating and passing abilities

white has an offensive spark but he doesn't play enough.

the rest don't seem to have much hockey sense or haven't the experience to achieve a higher level in their game

It was more Mitchell not doing anything. He seems hesitant to break up Poni and Grabo, so with Wallin being a joke, you go back to the other plug Stajan. It wasn't really a compliment, slim pickins.

If those are counted, the boards should get a few assists every game too.

The difference between Stajan and Johnny Malkin is that Stajan prefers to fade into the background where Malkin thinks he's going to skate the puck into the net.

Stajan is the king of the phantom assist.

On another note, I find it amusing that Stajan plays close to 2/3 of the game centering Orr and Primeau, and then they move him to the 1st line with Kessel. It's not like Stajan is an elite winger - Kessel - away from being a #1 centre.

What do the Leafs do at centre? Grabovski and Wallin are fine in the #1b and 3 spots. Do we give Bozak a few games to see if he can be a solid #2 centre? Do we take a chance with Nylander and claim him off waivers? Burke has to do something. Not only are our centres ineffective offensively but they are also playing poorly in their own zone and are way below average in the faceoff circle.

Why doesn't Grabo play with him? Seems like the logical choice (but I'm guessing there's a good reason he doesn't).

One thing that I think he needs is a space-making winger. As shown, if he has room to skate he's pretty damn good.

Kessel made some nice dishes tonight too. I'd almost consider putting him at center. Not like it would be a downgrade

We dont really have any logical choices here.

This is the question we ask here every night before the game. For some reason we refuse to put our most skilled and best faceoff taking centerman with our best forward. Grabovski's line isn't exactly lighting the lamp right now.

Stalberg is actually the perfect fit. He would open up tons of ice, he can lay the puck off, that's the ultimate pairing that I see.

Nice to see Tosklala put in a solid game, too bad for the end result though. Nice game by Kessel but damn, Wilson's got to give up on Blake on his line. It's not going to work, he causes too many turnovers at the worst times. After the first game Kessel played I remember a post game Blake interview where he was asked about Phil and Blake kind of rolled his eyes and said something about Phil getting too many passes in bad positions and Kessel taking bad shots or something like that. I kind of got the feeling that Blake may be a bit jealous of Kessel. Who knows just sayin what I thought at the time. I'm still waiting to see Ponikarovsky-Grabovski-Kessel get a shot at playing together. Maybe tomorrow.

ya diving at center to knock the puck away from a Blackhawk to Kaberle who then passes to Kessel.. total phantom assist.....

How did he masterfully set the first one up?

Even better; how many primary assists does Stajan have in his career compared to secondary? I'd love to see that stat.
