Would you get down if...

Hey I am just watching this documentary called "The day that changed the game" its about the Gretzky trade. It got me thinking that after Messier, Ranford and more recently Smyth geting traded, is there anyone on the team that got traded today, that I would care too much about? Don't get me wrong, and don't take this thread the wrong way, I love the Oilers, and bleed Oil, but is there a player on this team that would tear you up if he got traded? If so who?

Good topic..the answer for me is a resounding "No". I like Vis and Souray even Gagner, but would I cry if they were traded, no way. They don't even come close to a Gretzky or Messier trade. hell, I teared up when they traded Coffey and Anderson. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that we won Cups with those guys. Maybe if we win a Cup or two with any current players I will feel different.

Same thing for me. Its been tough seeing a lot of players leave through the history of the franchise but not one player has been here enough, or significantly enough, to have that impact on me lately with Smyth being the latest example.

As I've commented from time its this that also makes it harder to identify with the current make up of the team.

As longtime fans though this is the byproduct of us being spoiled by so many HOF players that walked before.

I suspect younger fans might feel a lot differently.

No, because this team sucks and has no heart.

Not one player on this team. Its unfortunate. I would like there to be at least one player on the team that could be untradable(sp)

I wouldn't shed any tears or even feel bad if Hemsky, a guy like Gagner or Cogliano, or a veteran was traded.

After living through the Gretzky trade and the Messier trade etc there is not a single trade that would phase me.

they numbed me for life.

I'd feel pretty bad if Souray got traded.

For me, I've really admired what Ryan O'Marra did in his 6 minutes of ice time. I think i'd have a small breakdown if he left.

I would bawl my eyes out if we traded Moreau or Staios.

I think you mean bawl.

The alternative is not an especially inviting scenario.

Really?

I mean, guy's a good player but he's played a total of grand 110 games for the Oilers and 0 in the playoffs. He's been injured for almost as many games as he's played.

In fact, Souray played more (way more) games as a New Jersey Devil than he has as an Oiler. . .and can anyone even really remember what he looked like in a Devil uniform?

I like Souray, but he's a far cry from Ryan Smyth in terms of what they meant to this franchise.

What exactly would make you feel bad about trading Souray?

I dunno, maybe because he's my favorite player. I never compared him to Ryan Smyth or what he meant to the franchise, so I'm not sure why you brought that one up.

Or maybe he is one of the few guys on the team that doesn't suck. Or maybe its because of how he is captain material.

Remember the good ol' days where that quote was reserved for Jarret Stoll?

I'll second this.

The Ryan Smyth trade didn't even register as a blip on my emotional scale.

I am pretty much with Harrison and Replacement on this one. After living through the dismantling of the dynasty team one gets pretty jaded about this kind of stuff.

I would not like to see Souray get traded.

He and Khabby are the only reasons this team gets any respect at all.

Well, maybe the OTC.

IMO

there is not a single player I would go to the wall for to keep if it ment getting a better player

I think it is easier to make a list of players we want to dump then players we would want to keep.

Any oiler fan over the age of 30 is somewhat jaded to this kind of question after living through the 80's and 90's

Anyone on this team is expendable if the return is right; however, I'd be a little ticked if the Oil traded any of the following players: Penner, Hemsky, Gagner, or Smid. It would be foolhardy to give up on Hemsky despite a poor finish to last season and a poor start to this one). Interesting thing is that Penner and Smid were traded by the team this summer. I'm glad the deal didn't go through; they've developed into two of my favourites on the team.

I remember when Gretz was traded. Messier became my favourite player, but fans were outraged beyond belief. Not in my DNA to get that upset about such things.

The greatest players who ever laced them up, 1st and 2nd in all-time scoring, one of the greatest leaders in professional sports, #2 alltime scoring Defenceman (who also has the most goals in a season by a Dman), and the highest scoring European of all time.

There's a difference between the pedigree of the 80's Oilers, and anyone we currently have on our roster.
