What a joke. Craig played well enough up here and Krajicek needs to hit waivers. Smaby must be ****ing fed up at this point.

I guess it was between him and Paulie for the 13th forward and Szczechura won.

Edit: nevermind, that makes 12. I forgot Miller was gone.

Smaby had to agree to a second conditioning assignment. As his agent, Ben Hankinson said in a text message, "Matt needs to play. It's not doing Matt or Tampa Bay any good sitting in the press box every night. The plan is for him to go to Norfolk on conditioning, then come back to play."
Hopefully with Smaby, this is just a step to ease him back into an NHL game, and not a we have no idea what to do with you type of move.

I thought Craig was an upgrade over Miller, and that Szczechura is an upgrade over Craig. I think his hustle and skillset is a better match right now. Now if he would just stop running goalies...

I'm checking the CBA, and there is an exception for players on the LTIR. Which I assume Smaby has been put on. 6 days and/or three games is the limit. Lawton can file a request to the commissioner to extend the assignment for two more games.

The stated purpose of this is to allow the team to see if he is physically ready to play. But let's not kid ourselves.

Note that a guy on the LTIR does not count against the 23 man limit.

He isn't on LTIR. We would have heard about him being placed on the DL.

Hmm...the CBA doesn't say that a conditioning loan can only be used once a season per player. Yet I've heard journalists say that is the case.

Hypothetically, the Lightning could just keep sending Smaby down for "conditioning" every two weeks and avoid waivers completely. He could play the whole season in the AHL doing this. That's why I'd think there would be a limit.

The other type of conditioning loan is the LTIR exemption I posted. Smaby could have be placed retroactively on the LTIR today. Using the concussion he got in Norfolk for the reason.

They send out press releases for a move like that, and the team has not as of now.

I tweeted his agent Ben Hankinson a few seconds ago to see under what terms he's being loaned.

Conditioning. Under the current rules, there is no limit to how many times they do this as long as the player agrees to it.

I've heard many times before that a player can only be sent down once per season on a conditioning loan.

I'm not trying to be belligerent, but I can't recall a precedent for this.

lol. I googled "nhl conditioning loan" and this topic is on the second page of results.

Just remembered something. On Saturday, I did not see Smaby in the warm-up. Healthy scratches Fedoruk and Walker did. A player on IR is not allowed to skate in warm-ups. It may also be nothing.

I am almost certain Walker did not warm up. I look for him every game and never saw him.

I thought Walker was actually hurt and not a healthy scratch. And therefore not warming up.

I think if Smaby was truly hurt than sending him down now is really to get him back to some type of game form and when he comes back up he will finally get a shot. If he doesnt, than I have no clue what is going on.

All I know is Im so sick and tired of seeing good ol number 2 making the worst plays possible on both ends of the ice and still being dressed while Smaby sits on the sidelines.

Apperently Defense is suppose to be the new offense, didnt you know? Its like St.louis and his size....everyone knows short people cant play hockey.

Smaby is being sent to Norfolk so they can inject him with massive amounts of estrogen, that way him and LK can hold hands together and start trying to poke check the puck away like two little faries the bolts need.

DC's blog says Smaby's loan is for two weeks, the vanilla conditioning loan.

That's a new one on me.

If LK plays the whole time, and Ohlund is out but Smaby is down in Norfolk watching while our defense can't hit a fly, I'm going to be a wee bit ticked

Not for a dumb question, but what does this mean for Craig?

He is going to Norfolk to show he has NHL stuff?

Craig would show he has NHL stuff by playing in the NHL.

I think it's a matter of sending guys down as soon as they can, if they aren't going to play. They'll take a look at Chewy for now and see what they want to do.

Don't freak out about how many forwards the Lightning have, if someone gets hurt, they'll recall someone from Norfolk. Those days Craig is up accumulate after all.

Matt Smaby just prevented a Portland power play goal with a save in the crease. Still 1-0 Portland mid second period. http://*******/1eIzla
