Gillis - No Forsberg in the NHL

According to Dan Murphy of SportsNet he has been told by Mike Gillis:

Quote:
Mike Gillis just said that Peter Forsberg informed him that he plans to stay in Sweden this season instead of retuning to NHL.

Looks like he took Naslund's advice.

So, how long before we get the denial from J.P. Barry? He's usually pretty quick, shouldn't be more than an hour or two.

Like he followed his advice before - else Forsberg would've never played for the Canucks in the past.

Article now up on Sportnet:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/...lis_no_return/

And Bob McKenzie at TSN:
Quote:
Forsberg staying in Sweden this season and playing for MoDo. No NHL for Foppa this season. If foot holds up, perhaps next year.

How long until Eklund posts a "I've heard this might just be a smoke screen" post?

Or:

Forsberg to stay in Sweden. (E5)?

It's good news - don't have to worry about Forsberg lighting it up against Vancouver now.

It must be true - The Vancouver Province has now reported it:
Quote:
"My understanding is Peter is going to stay and play in MoDo and he won't return to the NHL this year," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said. "He made it [the decision] because it's more of a day-to-day thing with his foot as opposed to a situation where he's confident he can play.

"I think it's a tribute to him that he didn't want to put himself in a position where he's taking a roster spot and not being an everyday player on an NHL team."

Gillis brown-nosing in the hope of improving his chances of landing Forsberg next year.

Odd that Gillis was the one to come out with this, not Forsberg or his agent.

I remember reading that Gillis and Foppa's agent (whose name escapes me right now) used to go way back to Gillis' player agent days.

Considering that Gillis broke the news, could it have been possible that if the NHL route was chosen that the Canucks were legit front-runners for Forsberg? Makes you wonder...

I heard Forbserg was about to sign in Edmonton but was still deciding when Pat Quinn called him at midnight and demanded an answer and Foppa decided to stay in Sweden as a result.

That's too bad. I at least credit Gillis for actually trying. He seemed like he put a lot of effort into the Foppa front at least.

they just mentioned this on TSN right now as well - that "Canucks GM Mike Gillis has learned that Forsberg isn't coming back", and they showed Gillis commenting on it.

Kinda odd that it would be Gillis releasing this info... Forsberg's had no ties to the Canucks in the past. You'd think that if some GM/team was going to release info that he's not returning, it'd be Colorado?

Don Baizley (Forsberg's agent) and Gillis are quite good friends (as Gillis is with JP Barry and that landed Sundin).

I would expect that Gillis got the word from Baizley and likely asked Baizley if it was for public consumption before making the comments.

Probably because the Canucks were like that d-bag with 2 popped collars trying to hit on the girl by the bar. Girl just says, "Look! I have a boyfriend! leave me alone!" just to try to get his annoying ass off of her case.

Said guy goes back and brags to all his friends, "I could've bagged her, but she said she's got a Swedish boyfriend. Whatever."

Meanwhile cool, suave Mr. Avalanche comes along and sweeps her off her feet and scurry off to his place... where they "win the cup".

****ing Avalanche

Hmm you're right.
Forsberg's not much of a looker anyway.
