Too bad the kid didn't hang around. This is looking more and more like a lost season that would be a perfect time for a young player to learn to play in the NHL. Plus, at this pace, Hitch may not be around in a few weeks.
Honestly, this funk the Jackets are in is no place for a youngster like Filatov who's just finding his way. He's better off in the KHL honing his skills, rather than suffering through this losing streak with the Jackets. He's already questioning Hitch before when the team was doing relatively well.
While young players like Filatov need to face adversity and struggle through it, hopefully he's getting some of that in the KHL now that things aren't coming quite so easily for him.
I think one of the issues with Zherdev was that he wasn't going to listen to coaches when the team was losing badly every game. It wasn't like he was seeing the system be successful, so why should he buy into it when playing a more European style was far more fun?
The only way to get the young players to buy into the system is for them to see it is successful. And the Jackets need to build an atmosphere where losing is unacceptable, and that isn't going to happen until other issues are fixed.
