Tom Gilbert

okay so I have Gilbert in my fantasy league. Not a Oiler fan necessarily but have thought about dropping him but thought I would ask you guys- the experts on them. Should I just drop him? After last year I thought he would be one of my best going into this year but of course that has been a big NO.

Do you guys think he will bounce back or is this the new Tom Gilbert?

thanks in advance!

You mean Tombellina Gilbert? I think he'll start putting up better offensive numbers soon, but he's a softer than butter in the summer.

He'll probably start getting some more points but he's still playing horrible. I used to be a big fan of his, not anymore. Is there a dmen more softer in the NHL than Gilbert?

well softy or not, I have to assume last year had piled up some points on the powerplay.... not so much this year, that's what I was wondering if those #'s could come back

Tammy Gilbert came into the season stating he would shoot more and be more aggressive on the puck... he was benched for most of the 2nd period tonight - give him another game or two, watch his play and the decision should be there....

Unless your league gives points for buying shoes, watching movies, and playing Guitar Hero, you should drop Gilbert.

He is playing very poorly. He was benched for most of the second period. At the best of times he is on the second pp unit. Draw your own conclusions.

If Gilbert likes shoes so much, why didn't he become a shoe salesman instead of a hockey player.

He's horrible. I was one of the biggest Gilbert fans around. I always noticed he was soft, but I thought he had the smarts, or would develop the hockey sense, to atleast play well positionally and tie up opponent sticks, like Lidstrom. Not that I expected him to be another Lidstrom, but I think you get my point. Paul Martin and Rafalski are also great at that. If Gilbert can't even tie up the opponents stick when he see's a point shot or pass then he's an absolute idiot, besides being a huge softie, and has no business being in the NHL.

he doesn't suck. he's actually quite good, he's just incredibley soft, and loses to many battles for the puck, as well as, gets muscled for positioning.

ok maybe he's not that great...

He really needs to learn how to tie up sticks. That can be learned, so hopefully Renney gets on that, pronto!

I guess it depends how deep your league is. If you're expecting him ever to put up 45 points again you're going to be very disappointed though. Expect a perennial 35 points or so while bringing absolutely nothing else to the table.

This board hates Gilbert, but he is a good hockey player, just off to a bad start. last year was no fluke.

I would keep him.

I've been ragging on Gilbert pretty hard lately, but I think his biggest problem is that hes not sticking to the game thats made him successful, which is rushing the puck and supporting the play.

It seems like hes been put in a role as a shutdown defender which he doesn't know how to play and is having trouble adjusting.

I would just like to say that least year when I said Gilbert was awful, people accused me of being on various drugs.

He was the same player last year. He just picked up enough 2nd assists where he would pass to his D partner who would make the real play.

I'm stoked to see the coach seeing what all of us have been seeing... My friend and I were watching the replays, and just commenting on how Gilbert could have prevented both of those, but he was weak and lazy on the plays. I hope him being benched sent him a damn message. He isn't small, shouldn't play like he is.

Just throwing it out there, but I have a theory that this team misses Charlie Huddy a tonne right now.

He hasn't been very good defensively for awhile now, but I think people overlook that when he produces offensively. I think he's got good offensive sense, but not-so-good defensive sense. With Vis and Souray back, he might get more sheltered minutes now. Look for his production to increase (but don't necessarily expect a great +/- unless the Oilers start winning more games than not). But getting fewer minutes than Arsene is not a good sign.

And it really depends what other players are available when you're talking about fantasy hockey. One might be able to get away with dropping him right now and picking up later.
