Kovy or Semin

All things considered: price to re-sign, price to acquire, fit with the team.

Who would you prefer on the Oil?

As for as likelihood is concerned, this is right up there with Batman vs. Spiderman (Spiderman, of course).

Is this why you started this thread?

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklun...alchuk/1/24429

Since I don't want to generate any more hits to his site I'll quote the "article"
Quote:
I just landed and went through my texts and two sources, from different ends of the continent have told me that they are hearing that the Oilers are putting a huge package together to try and draw either Alexander Semin or Ilya Kovalchuk to Edmonton. The package would be some serious picks, prospects and 2 top six forwards.

On Kovalchuk I have heard that to this point Don Waddell wants nothing to do with any offers and while people have called they have essentially been told to not bother. For now. That could and will change if no deal is done soon.

On Semin, the money Washington hopes to get back for Nylander will have to go a long way and Backstrom is priority #1 with Semin being #2.

I say we make the playoffs, then take a run at Kovalchuk in FA.

Or alternately we offer them Hemsky, Gagner, Visnovsky, and basically anything they want for Kovalchuk, on the condition that we are allowed to negotiate a contract for next year with him before finalizing the deal. We take that time to woo him good, get him to negotiate a deal and accept. Next, we tell Kovalchuk that we are going to pull the trade, but the same offer or maybe even better will be available to him July 1. We say, "look how much better of a team you are coming to if we don't trade these players." Then we pull the offer for the trade and wait till July 1.

He only knows one team in the league, and by doing something like this we would be the second team he knows, greatly increasing our chances of landing him. It would be shady for sure, if even possible.

If there was ever a problem we could just blame it all on Kevin Lowe.

Is this where that came from, Larry?

I'd give up a whole lot for Kovy. He is only 26, afterall. Can't imagine the rediculous package it would take to get him, and would we have any guarantee he'd sign with us?

I'd easily offer Kovalchuk $120M over 15 years.

Year 1-9: $11M/yr
Year 10-11: $5.5M/yr
Year 12-15: $2.5M/yr

He gets paid out in a big way until 35, and then his salary falls into line with his age.

Neither...

Looking at: http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=EDM&season=0910

We would need to sign six players at league minimum to ice a 21 player roster next season....

I clearly got the idea from Ek, but just throwing the questions out there.

Note: Semin is RFA, Kovy is UFA

I am curious why so many are hard on Eklund, but are not critical towards other rumor sites? Eklund, as best as I can tell, is every bit as accurate as Spector or HTR or any of them.

As far as the question goes... certainly Kovalchuk. I would like to see a line of Kovalchuk-Penner-Hemsky.

Spector's sources are newspapers and TSN as he comments on other writers rumors. He doesn't make them up with made up sources like Eklund.

Who do we drop to cover that 11M/year part? Horcoff+Lubo?

Newly posted, (E4)

"I have information regarding the Kovalchuk-Semin to Edmonton rumor that i had previously posted. It turns that Daryl Katz has secretly met with Bruce Wayne at the billionaire's summer clubhouse in Kelowna to discuss the possibility of the Dark Knight lacing them up and doning the copper 'n' blue. Bill Gates was in attendence to take notes, Warren Buffet started working on the potential cap issues and Gaylin Weston provided the hors deourves. So there you have it Oiler fans, it is official.... Batman is expected to be in the lineup for Saturday night's game vs. Chicago" - Eklund

Cap hit = $8M. Moreau + Nilsson + Pisani + Staios = $9.2M

Ideal team:

Kovalchuk ($8M)-Horcoff-Hemsky
Penner-Gagner ($3M)-O'Sullivan
Brule ($2M)-Cogliano ($1.75M)-Eberle
Jacques ($1M)-X-Stortini

Visnovsky-Smid
Souray-Grebeshkov ($3.5M)
Gilbert-Chorney

Khabibulan
X

=$58.95M, but the RFA raises above may be conservative so make it $60M. Trade one of the Big Four and you have the cap space to round out the team.
