I just wish Horcoff could re-discover his 2007-08 mojo before he got that first shoulder injury. He scored almost every single goal that year in a prime scoring position, be it from tips, shots from the slot or those one timers from the side of the net. I just looked at the videos from all of his goals from that season and it's amazing the kinds of shots he got off. The goal he had against Pittsburgh the puck was almost in his feet and he still got a great shot away. Another goal against Washington he hits the post from in the slot and then the puck works its way around, he taps his stick on the ice calling for the puck while he's in the slot and one times it past the goalie. I miss seeing him score those one shot score kind of goals. Nowadays he's rarely in those same positions and he never gets the same kind of shot away.
Isn't it still easy simply to waive him and hope someone takes him? Edmonton doesn't have to send him down to the minors if he clears, he can still play...right?
It is true that they don't have to send him down to the minors. But he could not play until he cleared re-entry waivers which he would not. Nor would the Oilers risk this since they would be on the hook for half his salary and $2.75M in dead cap space for the next five and 3/4 years.
Like it or not, outside of a trade, career-ending injury, or a very surprise retirement the Oilers must deal with this cap hit for the forseeable future.
But Horcoff's contract is not nearly so out of whack that you panic and give him away. If he was making $4.25M and performing like he has the last little while, then I don't expect we would be hearing too many complaints. At this point Nilsson is a bigger drain on the Oilers cap space. And as much as it pains me to say this, so was Pisani when he was on the roster, becuase what he brings to the table right now could be in good part replaced by someone like Stone who is earning less than $1M
At least the OP's name fits him well. Great suggestion. Horc will just start to outplay his contract when he gets three years older and is past his prime. Penner was able to do it because the guy is still approaching his prime.
