Back on topic, I don't think any other team will have a 14 game winless streak this season, so I think we're pretty secure in the basement, unless we somehow get hot.
I'm more worried about Florida. They want to lose so bad, they're whacking their goalie upside the head with their sticks.
Good one.
I agree that our main competition will be Florida, Minnesota, Anaheim.
Although, Toronto isn't a playoff team they should and better go as high as possible in the standings. I'd hate to see Boston getting a good draft pick.

When we finish in 22nd, I want the Canes to construct a compilation video of all the miracle goals that got us there, set to the 'Thanks' song from the 2006 SC Flavor of the game song
We are now 11 full points behind SEVEN teams in the league standings. We have a game in hand on only two of them, the Islanders and Leafs. The rest have less games played than we do, and thus the potential to widen the gap even more.
Wow, I didn't even know the team was doing this badly compared to the rest of the league. I mean, holy ****. 11 points behind the team in 29th place? And 11 teams have double the points we have or more?
At least this cushion will protect us from an untimely hot streak

Yep, we need to pad this cushion as much as we can. We're bound to go on some sort of streak at some point, most teams do. Look at the Leafs, they've either turned something around, or are on a very nice streak. I, personally do not want the same thing to happen here. The Leafs look like a team right now ready to go the fight for 8th, but likely finish 9,10,11... good for them as it screws Boston, but that scenerio would be useless for us.

We have very little time, only about a month or may be 6 weeks top, for a hot streak to start. We'll probably see more roster offloading even before that, the Olympic break starts soon after that, with a trade deadline looming.
If JR truly wants to work with the future plans in mind he shouldn't allow a hot streak.
We'll see a lot of kids from Albany, roster rotations, IR placements and Legace.
Having a big cushion is still very nice to have. Hard to say whether teams like Florida or Anaheim would want to switch into a full tanking mode, so we better distance ourselves form the rest of bottom feeders.
My concern mainly is a streak lifting us out of a top 2-3 pick and in around 5-7. I was looking over the standings from last season and the distance between the Islanders (30th place) in comparison to Atlanta (26th place). They ended up 15 points apart, but if you reverse each teams last 10 games, the difference in points would have been 1 lousy point. they were 8 points apart heading into the final 10 games. It's just a little crazy how things can play out. Obviously it's out of anybody's hands and we just have to wait and see, go with the flow, but I don't worry about us making the playoffs, or a push as much as I now worry about a little run, or hot streak, that could place us out of a gem draft pick into a possible mediocre one.
The thought of having a 13-15, or a whopping 20 point seperation nearing the final 15 games or so is what I want. We likely wouldn't screw that up, but if we're 8-10 points in seperation, the last 10 games can change things.
As a Kings fan talking about the draft and who you would want to take and tanking for that player was fun. I wish the canes the best of luck and hope you can get another player like Staal.

Well, apparently that also makes you "not a true fan" (been accused of such so far this year), so welcome to the club. Or...I guess I'm welcoming myself to your club.
