Sens at the WJC

Now that sweden has confirmed their lineup, thought it might be time for this thread.

Sweden (confirmed)
*Made the cut*
- F Andre Petersson
- F Jacob Silfverberg

*Didnt make the cut*
- G Robin Lehner

*Staying in NHL*
- D Erik Karlsson

Canada
*Made the Cut*
- D Jared Cowen

*Didnt make the cut*
- F Derek Grant
- D Patrick Wiercioch (injured)

USA
*Didnt make the cut*
- D Chris Wideman
- F Jeff Costello

thats it - that's all the WJC eligible prospects in the ottawa system right now (i believe).

I think Derek Grant is also eligible, but unless you're Jonathan Toews level good, you're probably not making team canada from the NCAA as a forward.

It's going to be the sens best WJC!

I wonder what the odds of Patrick Wiercioch making the team are ?

Jacob Markström I think. I've not seen him play, but by the sounds of things he's pretty good.

Anders Nilsson is a back up goalie
Robin Lehner is a starter

Markstrom will play every game, that's the reason why they choose Nilsson before Lehner.

You mean Flopström. And yes, he is good, but wasn't good enough against us last year. He is 19 years old (1990). Lehner is 18 years old (1991).

We nicknamed him that after he was flopping around in his crease against us in the gold medal game. I was trying to be funny.

Underrated prospect: Chris Wideman

He, like Karlsson is small, but more defense first ( although is a good PMD)

He is working on putting on muscle, and may be able to be a very solid 3rd pairing D-man

/me removes the egg from his face and grows a sense of humour

Also, that explains why I couldn't find any mention of a Flopstrom...

You clearly don't know what your talking about. Nilsson is the starter for Lulea in the Elite League. Moreover, the reason for a back up is to fill in in case of injury or the #1 struggling. If they thought Lehner would be better for that role he'd be on the team, as the back up, regardless of what they do for their current team.

Uhhhh I doubt that. Have you even considered the possibility that Lehner may not be as good as some of you guys are making him out to be?

you are correct. He's a very very very long shot, but i'll add him until he is officially eliminated.

But... but... I thought we had three franchise goalies in Leclaire, Elliott, and Lehner

I'm looking forward to seeing Wiercioch playing on Canada's D, hope he does make it! And Petersson for Sweden.

I'm pretty sure Lehner's dad was the goalie coach for Lundquist. That speaks to him having excellent resources to get better.

Other than that, it's traditionally a 19y.o. tournament, is Lehner 19? I thought he was a 1991 birth year?

Lehner is going to be a BEAST when he plays in the NHL, he was a great draft pick. (Vermette for Leclaire/Lehner, now who won the trade? ) I watched Lehner play live when the Greyhounds faced the 67's. The kid is young, and has tremendous potential.
It's a shame he didn't make the cut, but hey there's always next year!

I sincerely feel that Lehner will challenge for a spot on the team, but should at least play in the AHL, so we have a back-up in case of injury.

Robin Lehner doesn't play in Sweden, that's why he didnt get picked.

Will Cowen most likely get his normal jersey number(#2)? Or does someone else have the same number that might make it?

You can probably scratch both Wideman and Costello of the list, both didn't make the preliminary U.S roster.

Cowen and Wierchioch were invited to the team canada training camp.

Not a big surprise, Grant not invited
