The Boom Jackets: Like or dislike?

Dislike myself. I have an appreciation for music, but a drumline does not belong in a hockey arena. It's annoying and does more to kill the atmosphere than add to it.

I've got to agree with you. It's not a big problem or anything but during the game I just couldn't help thinking they were out of place. This isn't high school football. My wife and daughter really liked them though, fwiw. Maybe it's the kind of thing that seems silly now but you get accustomed to it and by the end of the year, it's fine.

I am kind of torn. The idea sounds good but there were times when it was very annoying and just plain noisy. Needs to be more bass drums. Also a different name. That's pretty cheesy IMO.

Is this going to be every game?? I can't imagine that they would be there on the weeknight games.

Not sure how i feel about them. I can say that the music that was playing during the game last night was much better then the stuff we are use to. Also, did you see the number of replays? They even had reverse angles of the goals! Game ops for this game at least seemed to take a step in the right direction.

I thought they were okay.

Our new entrance song sucked.

Music overall was better.

off specific topic, but close

The drum guys might have a place, but they can't be a wall of noise. Last night, they were mostly that. Play a couple of 20 second "clap your hands" rhythms, but don't try and play a 3 minute song.

A good rule in life applies to a hockey game too. Don't over-play the organ!

I don't need songs from Bob Dawson. I'll take Metallica, thank you.

"Woman" seems to be gone, but whatever the hell is the tick tick tick tick boom song - I hate it.

In summary, let the drum guys play a little think whenever Bob D reaches for the organ!

I kind of liked it, but have to wonder if the team is going to spend the cash on what were there 5-8 members of the boom jackets for every game?

Dislike. Cowtown football garbage.

But when half the crowd was wearing red last night, well, there you go.

At this point I am indifferent. I wasn't really impressed last night. I can see how they could be an asset. Anything that helps get people up off their seat and making noise is good. If people sit back and listen then they are doing us a disservice.

The Boo(-,m,b?) Jackets is a terrible name.

I'll pass on them, maybe once in a while, but not a staple. Last night, much of the entertainment was terrible. Its opening night, go with the sure fire winners....future Jackets, not some terrible "try and catch a parachute on ice"....stupid, and the puck shooting from what seemed to be around 10' MAX, was pathetic also. The home opener is not a time to try the entertainment options in the suggestions bin Brings back memories of the Revel wireless opener a few years ago. At least we didnt get figure skaters! The metal music they were playing were old 80's music, Iron Maiden, etc. And to cap off the bad entertainment, lets have our people give out a promo poster right in the exit alleyways.......it got so clogged with people acting like a starving 3rd world country for a freakin poster.

But at least the hockey was good

My wife and I both liked them and thought they fit in with the Civil War theme.

I don't have a great deal of dislike, but overall I didn't.

1. Stupid name, honestly
2. The drums should sound like some civil war theme or something with x-tra bass if you do introduce them. They sounded nothing of the sort.

Anything that makes noise in the arena is fine by me!! Every game? No, but every 3rd-4th would be OK. What I did like is we had replays during stoppages instead of morons embarassing them selves wiggling thier fat ass, marriage proposals, stupid contests and crap like that! Its a hockey game, keep it that way!!

Personally I liked the drum line, and while they could use some really big toms I wonder how much bass Nationwide's PA can provide.

They were fun, played well and tradition be damned!

I liked them - anything to make the game experience more unique, and less of a cookie-cutter, Casio and Movie Clips experience, is fine by me.

And no offense stoney, but if you just 'let the hockey sell the hockey', then you aren't going to get any but the most diehard fans (until the team gets amazing, that is). That was kind of what, say, Pittsburgh did before Crosby and Malkin made them a force, and their attendance was awful and they were on the verge of bankruptcy.

I preferred the drum line to the organ personally. The rote organ stuff we've been hearing for years seems to suck the life out of the building.

During the game, there are stoppages. For those of you that don't like the drum line which of the following would you prefer to fill in the "deadtime"?

1. Organ
2. Rush, AC/DC, etc.
3. Movie clips
4. Replays
5. Fan interactions - Chipotle chutes, dance for a burrito, marriage proposals, kiss cam, etc.

If they keep the drum line, they need to coordinate things a bit better. I'm assuming that games ops has some kind of "script" that they follow, but maybe there is a director type person that makes the choices at the time. I dont' know.

Get them up and moving; Marching snares and a big bass drum. Think Stinger patrolling the arena with his drum (much mode effective). They're just too isolated and out of synch with what's going on in the arena. Drums can really get you going (think OSU ramp entrance) not effective as they could be. Get a consultant from Columbus Percussion to help!

But they don't. A military-style march actually would fit the theme, though, and that would be cool. The Boom Jackets sound like some silly Blue Man Group kind of thing, not Civil War drumming.

Kudos on the Tom Waits quote, by the way.
